Wage Aspirations and Unemployment Persistence ∗

چکیده
The reservation wage is an integral part of most theories of involuntary unemployment. We use panel data to examine the empirical determinants of the reservation wage in particular the inßuence of previous wages and consider what this implies for the evolution of the natural rate of unemployment. We Þnd that previous wages have a signiÞcant but relatively small effect on reservation wages (an elasticity between 0.15 and 0.47). We also Þnd considerable differences across genders with previous wages being more important for men and market wages being more important for women. Overall our results suggest that unemployment will adjust relatively quickly to shocks. JEL ClassiÞcation: J64, E24

The Role of Wage Persistence in the Evolution of the College-High School Wage Gap
This paper examines the role of persistent effects of past labor market conditions in explaining trends in the college-high school wage gap in the US. I document increases in the wage gap for older workers since the late 1990s, which are larger than those predicted by standard explanations and are consistent with an important role for persistence in the wage gap. Using a semi-parametric estimat...
متن کاملWage inequality and overeducation in a model with efficiency wages
This paper shows that the existence and persistence of ‘overeducation’ can be explained by an extension of the efficiency wage model. When calibrated to fit the amounts of overeducation found in most empirical studies, the model implies that both the relative wage and the relative employment rate of high-skill workers depend inversely on aggregate economic activity. Keeping aggregate employment...
متن کاملStrategic Wage Bargaining, Labor Market Volatility, and Persistence
This paper modifies the standard Mortensen-Pissarides job matching model in order to explain the cyclical behavior of vacancies and unemployment. The modifications include strategic wage bargaining (Hall and Milgrom, 2006) and convex labor adjustment costs. The results reveal that our model replicates the cyclical behavior of both variables remarkably well. First, we show that strategic wage ba...
متن کاملReply to Skillman
Gil Skillman’s comments fall into two groups: specific comments on the model and broader questions concerning the fruitfulness and power of our approach in comparison to other approaches. We briefly address the specific points before turning to the some of the interesting and more general issues raised by Skillman. Skillman suggests that our account of the movements in relative wages implies th...
متن کاملSunspot equilibria with persistent unemployment fluctuations∗
We provide a business cycle model able to replicate the large amount of persistence in output and unemployment fluctuations found in the data. These variations in the unemployment rate are the result of self-fulfilling changes in expectations about future inflation in the wage bargaining process between workers of firms. ∗Financial support from the Agence Nationale de la Recherche (ANR) is grat...
