چکیده

This work identifies the presence of long idle times as the main cause for the high performance degradation suffered by TCP over bursty error environments. After a comprehensive and fully experimental analysis, performed over an IEEE 802.11b real platform, it is derived that the traditional computation that TCP uses for the RTO estimation does not behave properly over channels prone to suffer from bursty errors. The authors propose a modification to that algorithm so as to avoid such an undesirable behavior

TTAF: TCP Timeout Adaptivity Based on Fast Retransmit over MANET

Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) is one of the most widely deployed transport layer protocols. It responds to all packet losses, either due to congestion or link breakages, by invoking various congestion control mechanisms. All these mechanisms imply a reduction in the amount of transmitted data. Computing a proper value of the retransmission timeout (RTO) is a challenge for TCP. In mobile a...

HMM-based channel error mitigation and its application to distributed speech recognition

The emergence of distributed speech recognition has generated the need to mitigate the degradations that the transmission channel introduces in the speech features used for recognition. This work proposes a hidden Markov model (HMM) framework from which different mitigation techniques oriented to wireless channels can be derived. First, we study the performance of two techniques based on the us...

On Retransmission Schemes for Real-time Streaming in the Internet

This paper presents a trace-driven simulation study of three classes of retransmission timeout (RTO) estimators in the context of low-bitrate real-time streaming over the Internet. We explore the viability of employing retransmission timeouts in NACK-based real-time streaming applications that support multiple retransmission attempts per lost packet. In such applications, real-time RTO estimati...

Effects of Receive Buffer Size and Timer Granularity on TCP Performance over Erroneous Links in a LEO Satellite Network Effects of Receive Buffer Size and Timer Granularity on TCP Performance over Erroneous Links in a LEO Satellite Network

This master thesis presents a preliminary investigation into the impact of TCP’s advertised receive buffer size and timer granularity on TCP performance over an erroneous link in a low earth orbit (LEO) satellite environment. Conducted simulations include over 200 different combinations of TCP flavor, advertised receive buffer size, timer granularity, and bit error rates. Results show that TCP ...

On the properties of an adaptive TCP Minimum RTO

The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) specified in RFC 2988 the Minimum TCP-RTO and recommended that the TCP Retransmission Timeout (RTO) should not be smaller than 1 second. According to RFC 2988, there are two main limitations that call for a lower bound to protect TCP from spurious timeouts: i) the OS clock granularity (500ms for most OSs at the time of RFC 2988 publication) and ii) the...
