11.1 Introduction Spiking neurons are highly non-linear oscillators. As such they display collective behavior that may have important calculational manifestations. Synchronization between the ring of diierent neurons is the rst topic to which we devote our attention. This behavior can be brought about in our integrate-and-re model through excita-tory synaptic couplings without delays, or inhibitory couplings with delays. Once the mechanism of synchronization is established, this phenomenon can be used for deening data clustering. The clusters correspond to neurons that re synchronously, with diierent clusters ring at diierent times. This behavior can also be described as temporal segmentation, separating data through phase lags between excitations of diierent aggregates. This separation is characteristically limited to a small number of segments, a limitation that is inherent to the behavior of coupled non-linear oscillators.

Evidence for coherent collective Rydberg excitation in the strong blockade regime.
We report on strong van der Waals blockade in two-photon Rydberg excitation of ultracold magnetically trapped 87Rb atoms. The excitation dynamics was investigated for a large range of densities and laser intensities and shows a full saturation and a strong suppression with respect to single-atom behavior. The observed scaling of the initial increase with density and laser intensity provides evi...
متن کاملRoundabout relaxation: collective excitation requires a detour to equilibrium.
Relaxation to equilibrium after strong and collective excitation is studied by using a Hamiltonian dynamical system of a one-dimensional XY model. After an excitation of a domain of K elements, the excitation is concentrated to fewer elements, which are made farther away from equilibrium, and the excitation intensity increases logarithmically with K. Equilibrium is reached only after taking thi...
متن کاملNuclear collective processes study with attosecond laser pulses
In this paper the possibility of the excitation of collective nuclear motion with attosecond laser pulses is investigated. Following the results of our earlier results (Lasers in Engineering, 11 (2001), p. 259) the hyperbolic heat transport for nuclear matter is formulated and solved. It is shown that in the vicinity of the 30 MeV excitation energy the recollided electrons can excite the giant ...
متن کاملCollective excitation of Rydberg-atom ensembles beyond the √ N enhancement
In an ensemble of laser-driven atoms involving strongly interacting Rydberg states, the excitation probability is usually strongly suppressed. In contrast, here we identify a regime in which the steadystate Rydberg excited fraction is enhanced by the interaction. This effect is associated with the build-up of many-body coherences, induced by coherent multi-photon excitations between collective ...

A model of the ρ-meson as a collective excitation of q ¯ q pairs in a system that obeys the modified Nambu–Jona-Lasinio Lagrangian is proposed. The ρ emerges as a dormant Goldstone boson. The origin of the ρ-meson mass is understood as a result of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking. The low-energy dynamics of ρ, π, ω and γ is consistently described in this new framework. The model accounts fo...
متن کاملQuantum computing with collective ensembles of multilevel systems.
We propose a new physical approach for encoding and processing of quantum information in ensembles of multilevel quantum systems, where the different bits are not carried by individual particles but associated with the collective population of different internal levels. One- and two-bit gates are implemented by collective internal state transitions taking place in the presence of an excitation ...
