Ergatives Move Too Early

چکیده
We examine the ban on Ā-movement of the external argument of a transitive verb that holds in many morphologically ergative languages. We argue that the prohibition against movement of the ergative subject should not be derived from restrictions on the movement of the ergative DP. Rather, we suggest that movement of the ergative argument is per se unproblematic, but if it applies, it applies too early, and thereby creates problems for its absolutive co-argument, which does not receive structural case. In morphologically accusative languages, no such movement asymmetry arises because arguments move too late to trigger the fatal consequences that moving ergatives cause. We present a co-argument-based analysis that implies a strictly derivational syntax in which the order of operations plays an important role in deriving properties of the grammar.

متن کاملInterlanguage Ergative Constructions and Learnability
A certain group of English verbs, the ergatives, is consistently mis-passivized in Chinese-speakers' interlanguage. Comparison of the ergative construction in Chinese and English shows that they share similar properties. However, this does not seem to facilitate learning of the target English construction. Furthermore, the passive ergatives are not attributable to exemplification in either the ...
متن کاملA Computational Treatment of Differential Case Marking in Malayalam
Case is often treated as an uninteresting part of computational processing (both parsing and generation). In the mainly free word order South Asian languages, case plays a theoretically well established role in syntactic and semantic processing. Case is used not only to help identify grammatical relations (e.g., ergatives indicate subjects), but also contributes significantly to the semantic an...

Entrepreneurs in electronic markets move in industries where a strong corporate brand can deliver competitive advantage through differentiation. It not only facilitates increased attention. متن کاملA Improved Frame Slotted Aloha Protocol with Early End in Mobile RFID Systems
Frame slotted ALOHA (FSA) protocol is a classic tag anti-collision protocol. Similar to most existing anti-collision protocols, The FSA initially aims at tag identification of static scenarios, that is, all tags keep still during the tag identification process. However, in many real scenarios, tags generally move along a fixed path in the reader coverage area, that is, tags stay the coverage ar...
