Morbidity from sternal wound dehiscence was close to 50% until recently, but with recent advances, including sternal fixation techniques and various reconstructive surgical options, this has improved. This article outlines the problems of wound dehiscence and delayed healing following median sternotomy and provides an overview of the pertinent management options.

Impact of vacuum-assisted closure therapy on outcomes of sternal wound dehiscence†.
OBJECTIVES Sternal wound dehiscence (SWD) after cardiac surgery is a rare but serious condition associated with considerable costs and morbidity. We sought to evaluate the results of the introduction of vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) therapy in the management of sternal wound dehiscence, compared with those of previous conventional treatments. متن کاملUse of titanium plate fixation system in late sternal dehiscence repair
Sternal instability with mediastinitis is a very serious complication after median sternotomy. Sternal dehiscence repair together with debridement of the infected tissue is the mainstay of therapy where various modalities are employed. Here, we report the use of titanium plate for sternum stabilization in a patient with sternal dehiscence and superficial wound infection.
