Denitrification and nutrient assimilation on a restored oyster reef

چکیده
Global loss of 85% of oyster reef ecosystems over the past 130 yr (Beck et al. 2011) has led to both growing recognition of the services once provided by healthy oyster reef ecosystems (Grabowski et al. 2012) and increasing interest in restoring these ecosystems. In Chesapeake Bay, USA, populations of the native oyster Crassostrea virginica have been reduced to <1% of historic levels through a combination of overharvesting, poor management practices and the impacts of 2 oyster diseases (Wilberg et al. 2011 and references therein). Between 1990 and 2007, oyster reef restoration activities were under-

Impacts of Oyster Reef Restoration on Primary Productivity and Nutrient Dynamics in Tidal Creeks of the North Central Gulf of Mexico
The ability of oysters to remove large quantities of particulates from the water column, thereby potentially improving water quality, has been cited as one of the reasons for oyster reef restoration. However, this ability has not yet been effectively demonstrated in the field. As part of the Alabama Oyster Reef Restoration Project, this study was designed to assess impacts of restored eastern o...

متن کاملDenitrification potential of the eastern oyster microbiome using a 16S rRNA gene based metabolic inference approach
The eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) is a foundation species providing significant ecosystem services. However, the roles of oyster microbiomes have not been integrated into any of the services, particularly nitrogen removal through denitrification. We investigated the composition and denitrification potential of oyster microbiomes with an approach that combined 16S rRNA gene analysis, me...
متن کاملBiophysical Constraints on Optimal Patch Lengths for Settlement of a Reef-Building Bivalve
Reef-building species form discrete patches atop soft sediments, and reef restoration often involves depositing solid material as a substrate for larval settlement and growth. There have been few theoretical efforts to optimize the physical characteristics of a restored reef patch to achieve high recruitment rates. The delivery of competent larvae to a reef patch is influenced by larval behavio...
متن کاملSETBACKS AND SURPR I SES Do restored oyster reefs benefit seagrasses? An experimental study in the Northern Gulf of Mexico
Oyster reefs and seagrass beds are being lost worldwide at alarming rates. These habitats provide many services to humankind and, thus, much effort has been dedicated to their restoration. Here, we examine the efficacy of created oyster reefs at enhancing seagrass beds through the amelioration of hydrographic conditions and water quality. We carried out a field experiment in the Northern Gulf of...
