چکیده

We describe an experimental technique for the production of highly monodisperse emulsions (with minimum achievable polydispersities < 3%). The phase to be dispersed is introduced into a coowing, surfactant laden continuous phase via a tapered capillary. Drops detach from the capillary when the streamwise forces exceed the force due to interfacial tension. Drop size is a function of the capillary tip diameter, the velocity of the continuous phase, the extrusion rate, and the viscosities and interfacial tension of the two phases. Emulsions composed of a variety of uids and with drop sizes ranging from 2-200 m have been produced using this technique. Enhanced-throughput production of polymersomes using a parallelized capillary microfluidic device

We report a parallelized capillary microfluidic device for enhanced production rate of monodisperse polymersomes. This device consists of four independent capillary microfluidic devices, operated in parallel; each device produces monodisperse water-in-oil-in-water (W/O/W) doubleemulsion drops through a single-step emulsification. During generation of the double-emulsion drops, the innermost wat...

Visualization Study of Oil-in-Water-in-Oil (O/W/O) Double Emulsion Formation in a Simple and Robust Co-Flowing Microfluidic Device

A simple and robust co-flowing microfluidic device for double emulsion preparation is designed and assembled to visually study the double emulsion formation by the use of a microscope and high-speed camera. Using a visualization system, the transient processes of double emulsion formation in co-flowing stream are observed and recorded for a variety of flow rates. The effects of flow rates of ea...

Monodisperse Water-in-Oil-in-Water (W/O/W) Double Emulsion Droplets as Uniform Compartments for High-Throughput Analysis via Flow Cytometry

Here we report the application of monodisperse double emulsion droplets, produced in a single step within partially hydrophilic/partially hydrophobic microfluidic devices, as defined containers for quantitative flow cytometric analysis. Samples with varying fluorophore concentrations were generated, and a clear correlation between dye concentration and fluorescence signals was observed.

Effects of chemical and physical parameters in the generation of microspheres by hydrodynamic flow focusing.

Hydrodynamic flow focusing is a seminal, easy-to-use technology for micro- and nanodroplet generation. It is characterized by the co-axial focusing of two (or more) immiscible liquid streams forced through a small orifice. In this method, the outer continuous phase has a much higher flow velocity than the inner disperse phase. While passing through the orifice, the prevailing pressure drop and ...
