چکیده

The pitch dynamics seem to be based on the pitch thresholds (DLs) between the Vowels, V and CV, and also CV and CV. In this study, the DLs were measured for discrimination of pitch (fundamental frequency) of complex tone, Japanese Vowel (V) and Consonance-Vowel (CV) speech. A nominal F0 of complex tone was 170 Hz and the pitch of V and CV speech were resynthesized same as 170Hz. Tone was band-pass filtered ranged from 1 to 5 of harmonic components. Tone and speech presented in threshold equalizing noise. As the results, the pitch DLs of V were same as the F0DL of complex tone and the DL of vowel “a” and “o” were larger and that of “e” was smaller. These results suggest that F1 information within the dominance region was used for pitch discrimination of complex tone of 170Hz-F0. It seems that temporal fine structure (TFS) information on F2 was used for pitch discrimination. For CV including /t/ and /k/, the DLs were depended on the vowel, because of voiceless consonant. Also, we measured the DLs between V and CV, as V-CV, then between CV and another CV, as CV-CV. The results shows the DLs of V-CV and CV-CV sound were estimated using the geometric mean of DLs between V and CV.

Is Acquisition of L2 Phonemes Difficult? Production of English Stress by Japanese Speakers

This study examined the production of English lexical stress by Japanese speakers to determine which acoustic features associated with English lexical stress are difficult for Japanese speakers to acquire. Realization of lexical accent differs between languages. English is a stress-accent language where the accent is expressed by a combination of pitch, duration, intensity and vowel quality (Fr...

Effect of Pitch on Japanese Word-initial Stop Production by Korean Speakers

This study investigated the relationship between the production of Japanese stops by Korean speakers and word pitch pattern. Both Korean and Japanese languages have stops, but they have different phonetic characteristics: Japanese has voiced and voiceless stops whereas Korean has three stops (aspirated, tense and lax), but no contrast in voicing. Korean stops are also associated with the pitch ...

The Study of Vowel Space and Formant Structure in Mazani Language

Objective: One of the parameters showing the correct phonetic and phonological development is the correct and clear articulation of vowels is achieved by changing the shape of vocal cords through altering the height and position of the tongue and the movement of the lips and jaw. The tongue’s height and position are the basis of the production and difference of vowels. In other words, the raw s...

The effect of consonantal context and acoustic characteristics on the discrimination between the English vowel /i/ and /e/ by Japanese learners

This paper investigated how Japanese learners of English discriminated the American English vowel /Ι/ from /Ε/ in /CVt/ monosyllables with 23 different initial consonants, and how the differing discrimination was related to the acoustic characteristics of the English vowels compared with those of Japanese vowels /i/ and /e/ in disyllables with a final syllable of /to/. The results showed that t...

Object-based attention modulates the discrimination of level increments in stop-consonant noise bursts

This study tested the hypothesis that object-based attention modulates the discrimination of level increments in stop-consonant noise bursts. With consonant-vowel-consonant (CvC) words consisting of an ≈80-dB vowel (v), a pre-vocalic (Cv) and a post-vocalic (vC) stop-consonant noise burst (≈60-dB SPL), we measured discrimination thresholds (LDTs) for level increments (ΔL) in the noise bursts pr...
