Rhizobia associated with neotropical tree Centrolobium tomentosum used in riparian restoration
نویسنده
چکیده
Centrolobium tomentosum is a tropical legume tree indicated for functional and structural restoration of riparian areas. This study was conducted to characterize the rhizobia isolated from nodules of C. tomentosum in situ and to determine their capacity of renodulation, in an experimental area of land rehabilitation in the Rio Doce valley. Nodulation potential to inoculation with 2 selected fast-growing Rhizobium strains separately and a mixed inoculum of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi was evaluated by the use of antibiotics resistance. Flood disturbance were observed not to affect renodulation by fast-growing strains. DNA fingerprinting RAPD (random amplified polymorphic DNA) and lipopolysaccharides (LPS) profiles were used to examine molecular relationships among field isolates, inoculants and reference strains. Maximal renodulation was exhibited by strain BHCBAb1 after 24 months after transplantation. Centrolobium tomentosum forms symbiosis with fastand slow-growing Rhizobium strains, and it is suggested that their nursery culture could be improved by inoculation of selected strain under low nitrogen-input conditions.

With limited financial resources available for habitat restoration, information that ensures and/or accelerates success is needed to economize effort and maximize benefit. In the Central Valley of California USA, riparian habitat has been lost or degraded, contributing to the decline of riparian-associated birds and other wildlife. Active restoration of riparian plant communities in this region...

Invasion by the non-native tree Tamarix has led to implementation of restoration projects aimed at maintaining the ecological integrity of many riparian communities in the southwestern United States. These restoration efforts may include Tamarix removal, manipulation of hydrologic regimes, and active revegetation of native species. The goal of this study was to determine which site characterist...
متن کاملPredicting the Recruitment of Large Woody Debris throughout a Watershed
Information about the spatial distribution of riparian vegetation, and the ecosystem services it provides, is required to prioritise the protection and restoration of riparian zones within watersheds. Large woody debris performs a range of fluvial geomorphic and ecological functions within streams. This paper describes a new technique for estimating how much large woody debris is provided by ri...
متن کاملResprouting from roots in four Brazilian tree species.
Previous studies pointed out that species richness and high density values within the Leguminosae in Brazilian forest fragments affected by fire could be due, at least partially, to the high incidence of root sprouting in this family. However, there are few studies of the factors that induce root sprouting in woody plants after disturbance. We investigated the bud formation on root cuttings, an...

2004). These studies have shown that tree shelters have the potential to (1) significantly increase survival rates; (2) accelerate growth rates; and (3) improve growth form (e.g., reduced taper). Survival and growth rates are enhanced both through protection from herbivory and, in some cases, ameliorated microclimate conditions inside tubes. Sweeney and Czapka (2004) found survival and growth o...
