چکیده

This work is concerned with the detection and the identification of immersed objects. Our efforts have been motivated by, and concentrated on, the specific problem of the LIDAR imagery of underwater mines. The difficulties of this problem are illustrated by the experimental data used in this study. We follow the standard approach which suggests to model the surface elevation as a random field. We combine the statistical analysis needed needed for the model of the roughness of the surface of the ocean with the physics of image forming which include focusing/defocusing, scattering and backscattering of the light beams, and finally the sensor noise, into a large simulation program. The latter is used to produce realistic images and video sequences of moored mines as seen from airborne platforms, making possible the analysis of the statistics of the image degradation process.

Aerosol Retrievals from CALIPSO Lidar Ocean Surface Returns

This paper describes approaches to retrieve important aerosol results from the strong lidar return signals that are received by the space-borne CALIPSO lidar system after reflecting off-ocean surfaces. Relations, from which the theoretically expected values of area under ocean surface returns can be computed, are presented. A detailed description of the lidar system response to the ocean surfac...

Conditional Random Fields for Airborne Lidar Point Cloud Classification in Urban Area

Over the past decades, urban growth has been known as a worldwide phenomenon that includes widening process and expanding pattern. While the cities are changing rapidly, their quantitative analysis as well as decision making in urban planning can benefit from two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) digital models. The recent developments in imaging and non-imaging sensor technologies, s...

A Shape from Silhouette Approach to Imaging Ocean Mines

The application of shape-from-silhouette methods for 3D imaging of underwater objects is explored in this paper. While there is a significant body of literature on the shape-from-silhouette technique, the reconstruction of an underwater object from a sequence of 2D LIDAR images presents additional difficulties in both the creation and processing of silhouettes from the data, as the water optics...

Laser pulse reflectance of the ocean surface from the GLAS satellite lidar

[1] The world’s oceans can potentially be used as an extended target for achieving a radiometric calibration of space borne lidar if the reflective properties of the surface can be accurately predicted from available environmental data such as wind speed. To test current understanding of ocean reflectance we compare surface pulse returns measured with the 1064 nm altimetry channel of the Geosci...

Evidence of refractive index variation with roughness in CLOUDSAT W-band radar and different applications of lidar/radar ocean surface echo

Lidar and radar observations from CALIPSO and CloudSat missions have allowed the development of methods to determine atmospheric parameters [1, 2]. Total aerosol optical depth (AOD) and cloud liquid water path have thus been derived at the scale of the lidar or radar footprint using AMSR-E wind speed information [3, 4], or the combination of lidar and radar observations using ocean surface echo...
