as well as the other small islands of the Lesser Antilles. In this view Bullbrook also concurs. Contrarily, Fewkes believes that the Caribs did not gain a foothold there, chiefly, it seems, because the typical stonework of the Lesser Antilles associated with the Caribs by Fewkes and other archeologists has not been found in Trinidad. There is a question, however, as to whether the stone artifacts referred to are actually Carib remains. In either event, there seems to be a sufficiency of historical evidence to demonstrate the reasonableness of Loven's theory. G., "Scientific Survey of Porto Rico and the Virgin Islands," New York Acad. The Trinidad research, it is hoped, will soon be furthered by cooperation between Trinidad archeologists and the Yale Peabody Museum.

germination of spores of Phycomyces blakesleanus, 1-methylguanine approaches in activity guanine itself where other methyl guanines and closely related compounds have activities of a lower order of magnitude. (Unpublished experiments with Wm. J. Robbins.) Since methylation in the 1-position would result in fixation of the lactam tautomer, it is perhaps permissible to speculate that with guanase...
متن کاملNucleotide composition in protein-coding and non-coding DNA in the zygomycete Phycomyces blakesleeanus.
The zygomycete Phycomyces blakesleeanus has a 30 Mb genome with a 35% content of guanine and cytosine (GC). We determined the GC content in Phycomyces genes and fragments of genes available in public databases, the frequency of nucleotides in each codon position, and the codon usage. We observed a difference of 18% between the GC content of protein-coding and non-coding DNA. This large differen...
متن کاملPhycomyces MADB interacts with MADA to form the primary photoreceptor complex for fungal phototropism.
The fungus Phycomyces blakesleeanus reacts to environmental signals, including light, gravity, touch, and the presence of nearby objects, by changing the speed and direction of growth of its fruiting body (sporangiophore). Phototropism, growth toward light, shares many features in fungi and plants but the molecular mechanisms remain to be fully elucidated. Phycomyces mutants with altered photot...
متن کاملDark Adaptation and the Light-growth Response of Phycomyces
1. A single-celled, elongating sporangiophore of Phycomyces responds to a sufficient increase in intensity of illumination by a brief increase in growth rate. This is the "light-growth response" of Blaauw. 2. The reaction time is compound, consisting of an exposure period and a latent period (this comprising both the true latent period resulting from photochemical action and any "action time" n...
متن کاملThe Light Growth Response and the Growth System of Phycomyces
1. The Roscoe-Bunsen law holds for the light growth response of Phycomyces if the time component of stimulation is short. With exposures longer than a few seconds, the reaction time to light is determined by the intensity and not by the energy of the flash. 2. The possible nature of the very long latency in the response to light is considered in terms of the structure of the cell and its mechan...
