The Agglomeration of Headquarters∗

چکیده
This paper uses a micro data set on auxiliary establishments from 1977 to 1997 in order to investigate the determinants of headquarter agglomerations and the underlying economic base of many larger metro areas. The significance of headquarters in large urban settings is their ability to facilitate the spatial separation of their white collar activities from remote production plants. The results show that separation benefits headquarters in two main ways: the availability of differentiated local service input suppliers and the scale of other headquarter activity nearby. A wide diversity of local service options allows the headquarters to better match their various needs with specific experts producing service inputs from whom they learn, which improves their productivity. Headquarters also benefit from other headquarter neighbors, although such marginal scale benefits seem to diminish as local scale rises. ∗The authors are respectively at the U.S. Bureau of the Census ([email protected]) and Brown University ([email protected]). Globalization and the Evolution of the Supply Chain: who gains and who loses?
This paper focuses on two distinct facets of globalization: the decrease in the trade costs of goods and the decline of communication costs between headquarters and production facilities within firms. When the unskilled have about the same wage in the two regions, the decrease of these costs fosters the gradual agglomeration of plants in the core region accommodating the headquarters. By contra...
متن کاملEffect of temperature on wet agglomeration of crystals
Objective(s):This study dealt with the wet agglomeration process in which a small quantity of binder liquid was added into a suspension of crystals, directly in the stirring vessel where the crystallization took place. The purpose of this investigation was evaluation of the effect of temperature on the agglomeration process in order to gain insight into the mechanism of the formation of the agg...
متن کاملAGGLOMERATION ASSESMENT OF NANO-SIZED ALUMINA POWDERS
Abstract: Nanoparticles exhibit a high reactivity and strong tendency towards agglomeration. In this study, aluminum oxide (alumina) nanoparticles were characterized by gas adsorption (BET), transmition electron microscopy (TEM) and photon correlation spectroscopy (PCS) techniques to assess the agglomeration of the particles. There is a good correlation between the BET and TEM measurements b...
متن کاملRole of Graphene Sheet Agglomeration in the Macroscopic Elastic Properties of Metal Matrix Nanocomposites
The purpose of the present work is to analyze the modulus of elasticity of graphene (Gr) sheet-reinforced metal matrix nanocomposites (MMNCs) using a homogenized model based on the Mori-Tanaka micromechanics approach. The main focus is to investigate the effects of Gr sheet agglomeration on the MMNC macroscopic elastic modulus. Also, the role of aligning Gr sheets in the mechanical performance ...
متن کاملSpherical Oil Agglomeration (SOA)/ Colloidal Gas Aphrons (CGA) Flotation
The main aim of this experimental work was to develop a separation process using micro- bubbles less than 100 µm in diameter. Micro-agglomerates were produced using 10kg crude oil/tone feed coal treated compared to 250 kg/tone feed coal treated for conventional spherical oil agglomeration. These micro-agglomerates were separated from the unagglomerated minerals by micro-bubble flotation. Colloi...
