چکیده

This paper describes the construction and evaluation of a segmental duration prediction model for Greek language with the application of CART (Classification and Regression Tree) machine learning approach. A ToBI annotated prosodic speech corpus was utilized for the construction of training and testing sets. Our phoneme category was composed of 34 phonemes distributed in 32.072 instances (in 5.500 words). Results showed the effectiveness of CART for the building of duration models for Greek language.

Improved duration modeling of English phonemes using a root sinusoidal transformation

Over the past few years, the “sums-of-products” approach has emerged as one of the most promising avenues to account for contextual influences on phoneme duration. This approach is generally applied after log-transforming the durations. This paper presents empirical and theoretical evidence which suggests that this transformation is not optimal. A promising alternative solution is proposed, bas...

Duration Modeling for Ar Synthesi

Duration modeling is a fundamental task of prosody generation for Text To Speech (TTS) systems. The objective of this task is to predict the duration of a speech unit from its phonological representation. Duration modeling has a significant influence on the intelligibility and the naturalness of the synthesized speech. This paper presents a Neural Network (NN) based approach to predict the dura...

On the First Greek-TTS Based on Festival Speech Synthesis

In this article we describe the first Text To Speech (TTS) system for the Greek language based on Festival architecture. We discuss practical implementation details and we capitalize on the preparation of the diphone database and on the prediction of phoneme duration module implemented with CART tree technique. Two male databases where used for two different speech synthesis engines, namely, re...

Friction Compensation for Dynamic and Static Models Using Nonlinear Adaptive Optimal Technique

Friction is a nonlinear phenomenon which has destructive effects on performance of control systems. To obviate these effects, friction compensation is an effectual solution. In this paper, an adaptive technique is proposed in order to eliminate limit cycles as one of the undesired behaviors due to presence of friction in control systems which happen frequently. The proposed approach works for n...

The Discursive Construction of Ethnic Identities: The Case of Greek-Cypriot Students

This study examines how Greek-Cypriot students aged 12 to 18, an understudied group of students, construct their ethnic identity in a complex setting such as Cyprus and what motivates the students in the selection of ethnic identity labels. The choice to focus on students aged 12-18 was made on the hypothesis that young children, who did not experience the 1974 war in Cyprus, may have a differe...
