Inferring 3-dimensional constraints with DEVI

چکیده
Constraints can be used to specify and maintain spatial relationships among objects in a geometric design. In the 3-D geometric design domain , the diversity of possible relationships among objects makes it diicult for the designer to specify useful or intended relationships in a productive and intuitive manner. We have built a constraint-based 3D geometric editor called DEVI that infers possible or intended relationships among objects of the design. DEVI's database of relationships between design primitives can be extended using a descriptive language which enables the developer to specify a set of rules made up of conditions , to be satissed, and inferences to be made. Each rule has two parts; the rst is a boolean condition wherein a certain situation is described; the second part is an instruction to the system to infer the speciied constraint (or set of constraints) if the boolean condition is true.

Inferring three-dimensional shapes from two-dimensional silhouettes
Although an infinity of three-dimensional (3-D) objects could generate any given silhouette, we usually infer only one 3-D object from its two-dimensional (2-D) projection. What are the constraints that restrict this infinity of choices? We identify three mathematical properties of smooth surfaces plus one simple viewing constraint that seem to drive our preferred interpretation of 3-D shape fr...
متن کاملYoung children infer preferences from a single action, but not if it is constrained.
Inferring others' preferences is socially important and useful. We investigated whether children infer preferences from the minimal information provided by an agent's single action, and whether they avoid inferring preference when the action is constrained. In three experiments, children saw vignettes in which an agent took a worse toy instead of a better one. Experiment 1 shows that this singl...
متن کاملA method for 2-dimensional inversion of gravity data
Applying 2D algorithms for inverting the potential field data is more useful and efficient than their 3D counterparts, whenever the geologic situation permits. This is because the computation time is less and modeling the subsurface is easier. In this paper we present a 2D inversion algorithm for interpreting gravity data by employing a set of constraints including minimum distance, smoothness,...
متن کاملSlice-Hoisting for Array-Size Inference in MATLAB
Inferring variable types precisely is very important to be able to compile MATLAB libraries effectively in the context of the telescoping languages framework being developed at Rice. Past studies have demonstrated the value of type information in optimizing MATLAB [4]. The variable types are inferred through a static approach based on writing propositional constraints on program statements [11]...
متن کاملInferring Ordered Trees from Local Constraints
We consider a problem of inferring an ordered tree from a set of local constraints on its leaves which we term as the ordered local consensus tree problem. Using our eecient decremental interval union algorithm, we show that the ordered local consensus tree problem for m constraints on n leaves can be deterministically solved in time O((m+n) log n): We also show that the related optimization pr...
