چکیده

The micro-time context of group processes (such as argumentation) can affect a group’s micro-creativity (new ideas). Eighty high school students worked in groups of four on an algebra problem. Groups with higher mathematics grades showed greater microcreativity, and both were linked to better problem solving outcomes. Dynamic multilevel analyses of the groups’ 2951 turns of conversation statistically yielded 53 watersheds (breakpoints) that separated 36 high micro-creativity time periods from 37 low ones. Group member actions within the last two speaker turns also influenced micro-creativity. Compared to agreements, recent disagreements yielded 11% greater micro-creativity. Students who behaved rudely (rude disagreements, commands) showed less micro-creativity ( 15% and 9%) than those who behaved politely (polite disagreements, questions/statements). In a special case, after a wrong idea, rude rather than polite disagreements raised groupmates’ micro-creativity (+60%). Teachers might encourage students to evaluate ideas carefully, speak politely, and avoid impulsive responses to rude behaviors. 2008 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. c. All rights reserved. Statistical Discourse Analysis of Group Problem Solving: Evaluations, Wrong Ideas, Rudeness, Justifications, and Micro-creativity

This study examines how group processes affected microcreativity. I videotaped eighty high school students as they solved an algebra problem in groups of four. Statistical discourse analysis of 2,951 turns of talk showed that correct contributions (CC, a measure of micro-creativity) occurred more often after a group member justified an idea, correctly evaluated an idea, politely disagreed or ex...

Effects of social metacognition on micro-creativity: statistical discourse analyses of group problem solving

This study examines how social metacognition (including evaluations and questions) affected micro-creativity during group problem solving. Twenty groups of high school students were videotaped as they solved a mathematics problem. Analyses of the 2,951 conversation turns showed that the likelihood of a correct contribution (CC, a measure of micro-creativity) was higher after a group member expr...

The Discourse of Creative Problem Solving in Childhood Engineering Education

Researchers and teachers are increasingly in agreement that classrooms should adopt more open-ended, ill-structured, creative problem solving pedagogies (Kapur, 2008). However, we lack sufficient understandings of how to assess the variegated outputs of learning activities that afford students considerable discretion over what they will produce, and of the mechanisms through which group work ca...
