Finite Element Analysis of Automotive Disk Brake and Pad in Frictional Model Contact
نویسنده
چکیده
The purpose of this work is to present a study of the thermomechanical behavior of the automotive disc brake during the braking phase. The first analysis is performed on the disc-pad model without the presence of thermal properties. Structural performance of the disc-pad model such as deformation and Von-Mises stress is predicted. The case of thermoelasticity on the same model with the inclusion of convection, adiabatic and heat flux elements were also studied. The prediction results of temperature distribution, deformation, stress and contact pressure are presented. Furthermore, the structural performances between the two analyses (mechanical and thermomechanical) were compared as well. The results of this investigation may assist brake engineers to choose a suitable analysis in order to critically evaluate structural and contact behaviour of the disc brake assembly.

Stress and Temperature Distribution Study in a Functionally Graded Brake Disk
In this paper, finite element elastic contact analysis of a functionally graded (FG) hollow brake disk in contact with pad, subjected to rotation, contact pressure and frictional heat is presented. The material properties vary through the thickness according to a power-law characterised by a grading index, n. The material property is purely steel at the core part and gradually moves and appr...

During the braking action, the kinetic energy produced at the wheel is transformed into heat energy, which doesn’t dissipate fast enough into the air stream from the brake to the brake disk; as a result, the thermal conductivity plays a critical role in handling such heat generated. Thermal judder, which is a result of non-uniform contact cycles between the pad and the disk brake rotor, which i...

Thermoelastic instability in automotive disk brake systems is investigated focusing on the effect of a finite disk thickness. A finite layer model with an antisymmetric mode of deformation can estimate the onset of instability observed in actual disk brake systems. Also some effects of system parameters on stability are found to agree well to experimental observations. 1 Introduction Dow and Bu...

Vehicle braking system is considered as one of the most fundamental safety-critical systems in modern vehicles as its main purpose is to stop or decelerate the vehicle. The frictional heat generated during braking application can cause numerous negative effects on the brake assembly such as brake fade, premature wear, thermal cracks and disc thickness variation (DTV). In the past, surface rough...

Safety aspect in automotive engineering has been considered as a number one priority in development of new vehicle. Each single system has been studied and developed in order to meet safety requirement. Instead of having air bag, good suspension systems, good handling and safe cornering, there is one most critical system in the vehicle which is brake systems. The objective of this work is to in...
