The Information Culture Challenge: Moving Beyond OAIS
نویسندگان
چکیده
One of the major challenges involved in digital preservation is to understand what the problem of preserving digital objects is in all of its diverse, idiosyncratic instantiations, rather than to look for uniform, technically feasible, economically sustainable, and standard-compliant solutions. We argue that by using a situated, descriptive approach to the investigation of actual environments where information is created, managed and stored, the sociocultural dimension of digital preservation can emerge and be used as a basis for action. This approach provides a way to move beyond the constraints of the Open Archival Information System model.

De - mystifying OAIS compliance : Benefits and challenges of mapping the OAIS reference model to the GESIS Data
Since its initial publication over a decade ago, the OAIS Reference Model, its concepts and terminology, have become essential to the digital preservation discourse. In this discourse, the topos – or myth – of “OAIS compliance” continues to play a central role as archives and repositories seek to demonstrate their fitness for the challenge of digital preservation. After briefly considering what...
متن کاملSupporting the Analysis and Audit of Collaborative OAIS's Using an Outer OAIS-Inner OAIS (OO-IO) Model
This paper addresses the question: What would distributed digital preservation look like using the OAIS Reference Model? The challenge is the need for several organizations to cooperate to achieve distributed digital preservation; using replication, independence, and coordination to address the known threats to digital content through time. The main purpose of the paper is to present an Outer O...
متن کاملMapping Significance Properties in OAIS: A case study with video games Extended Poster Abstract
This poster proposes mapping properties identified by both creators of video games as significant into the OAIS reference model. This research uses the framework provided by Giaretta et al. (2009), outlined as a clarification about the relationship between OAIS and significant properties, as a starting point. Utilizing data from the Preserving Virtual Worlds II grant and data from interviews wi...
