چکیده

The BL Lac object (blazar) Mrk 421 was observed during its outburst in 2004 April with the Whipple 10 m telescope for a total of about 24.5 hr. The measured g-ray rate varied substantially over the range from 4 to 10 minute 1 and eventually exceeded the steady g-ray rate of the Crab Nebula (standard candle) by a factor of 3. The overall significance of the g-ray signal exceeded 70 j and the total number of excess events was more than 10,000. This unique Mrk 421 outburst enabled the measurement of a high-quality spectrum of very high energy g-rays in a high state of emission. This spectrum is a power law and it extends beyond 10 TeV. Very High Energy Gamma Rays from Markarian 501

During remarkable flaring activity in 1997 Markarian 501 was the brightest source in the sky at TeV energies, outshining the Crab Nebula by a factor of up to 10. Periods of flaring activity each lasting a few days were observed simultaneously by several gamma ray telescopes. Contemporaneous multiwavelength observations in April 1997 show that a substantial fraction of the total AGN power is at ...

Gamma - Rays 1 Observation of gamma - rays greater than 10 TeV from

We have observed Markarian 421 during an extraordinarily high state in January and March 2001 with the CANGAROO-II imaging Cherenkov telescope. From 14 hours observations at a large zenith angle of ∼70◦, a signal of 298± 52 gamma-ray–like events was detected at E > 10 TeV with 5.7 σ significance. Under the assumption of power-law spectrum, we derived a steep energy spectrum of photon index ∼4.0...

OBSERVATIONS OF GAMMA-RAY EMISSION FROM THE BLAZAR MARKARIAN 421 ABOVE 250 GeV WITH THE CAT CHERENKOV IMAGING TELESCOPE

The γ-ray emission of the blazar Markarian 421 above 250 GeV has been observed by the CAT Cherenkov imaging telescope since December, 1996. We report here results on the source variability up to April, 1998, with emphasis on the 1998 campaign. For the flaring periods of this year, the energy spectrum was derived from 330 GeV up to 5.2 TeV: it is very well represented by a simple power law, with...

X-ray flares from Markarian 501

Motivated by the recent discovery of a hierarchical X-ray flaring phenomenon in Mrk 421, we conducted a systematic search for X-ray flares from Mrk 501, another well-known TeV blazar, by making use of the rich RXTE archival database. We detected flares over a wide range of timescales, from months down to minutes, as in the case of Mrk 421. However, the flares do not seem to occur nearly as freq...

THE TeV GAMMA-RAY SPECTRUM OF MARKARIAN 421 DURING AN INTENSE FLARE

We present the gamma-ray spectrum of the BL Lacertae object, Markarian 421, above 500 GeV during its most intense recorded TeV flare, on 1996 May 7. The spectrum is well fitted by a power law with an exponent of (statistical and systematic errors). The spectrum extends above 5 TeV with no evidence 22.56 5 0.07 5 0.1 for a cutoff, favoring determinations of the extragalactic infrared energy dens...
