چکیده

Dual Energy techniques allow an estimation of the effective atomic number and electron density through identification of the photoelectric and compton scattering components in the attenuation coefficient. However in the context of material identification, it is substantially more usefull to try and identify the material type and the thickness of the sample under investigation. Several simulation tools have been developed at the “Centre for X-ray Tomography” of the Ghent University (UGCT) which aid in this analysis. The effectiveness of the algorithm to identify the material type and thickness of the sample relies on two main factors. Two measurements need to be done with two setups which have essentially a different effective energy. The more these effective energies differ, the more contrast is obtained between different materials. On the other hand, the noise on the transmission values needs to be minimized. For this reason an optimization criterion is proposed which incorporates both factors.

Method for Dual High Energy X-ray Imaging with Flat Panel Detectors

Dual-energy X-ray imaging in the keV range is a well-known technique e.g. used in baggage scanning. It requires two measurements at different energies and/or detector efficiencies and allows displaying material properties as the effective atomic number and mass density. The method thus provides the information allowing identifying illicit materials such as explosives and contraband or high-Z ma...

Energy-Dependent Systematic Errors in Dual-Energy X-Ray CT

Dual-energy X-ray computed tomography (DECT) is a technique which is designed to allow the determination of energy-independent material properties. In this study, results of a computer simulation show that energy-dependent systematic errors exist in the values of attenuation coefficients synthesized using the basis material decomposition technique with acrylic and aluminum as the basis material...

Multi-Material Decomposition Using Statistical Image Reconstruction in X-Ray CT

Dual-energy (DE) CT scans provide two sets of measurements at two different source energies. In principle, two materials can be accurately decomposed from DECT measurements. For triple-material decomposition, a third constraint, such as volume or mass conservation, is required to solve three sets of unknowns from two sets of measurements. An image-domain (ID) method [1] has been proposed recent...

Monte Carlo Modeling of Dual and Triple Photon Energy Absorptiometry Technique

Introduction: Osteoporosis is a bone disease in which there is a reduction in the amount of bone mineral content leading to an increase in the risk of bone fractures. The affected individuals not only have to go through lots of pain and suffering but this disease also results in high economic costs to the society due to a large number of fractures.  A timely and accurate diagnosis of this disea...

Comparison of Singh index accuracy and dual energy X-ray absorptiometry bone mineral density measurement for evaluating osteoporosis

Background: The Singh index is an inexpensive simple method to evaluate bone density, commonly used to assess osteoporosis is based on the radiological appearance of the trabecular bone structure of the proximal femur on a plain antero-posterior (AP) radiograph. The purpose of this study was to compare between Singh index and bone mineral density measurement using dual energy X-ray abs...
