Using a Cognitive/Metacognitive Task Model to Analyze Students Learning Behaviors

چکیده
Adapting to learners’ needs and providing useful, individualized feedback to help them succeed has been a hallmark of most intelligent tutoring systems. More recently, to promote deep learning and critical thinking skills in STEM disciplines, researchers have begun developing open-ended learning environments that present learners with complex problems and a set of tools for learning and problem solving. To be successful in such environments, learners must employ a variety of cognitive skills and metacognitive strategies. This paper discusses a framework that combines a theory-driven, top-down approach with a bottom-up, pattern-discovery approach for analyzing learning activity data in these environments. Combining these approaches allows for more complex qualitative and quantitative interpretation of a student’s cognitive and metacognitive abilities. The results of this analysis provide a foundation for developing performanceand behavior-based learner models in conjunction with adaptive scaffolding mechanisms to promote effective, personalized learning

How do students’ learning behaviors evolve in Scaffolded Open-Ended Learning Environments?
Metacognition and self-regulation are important components for developing effective learning in the classroom and beyond, but novice learners often lack these skills. Betty’s Brain, an open-ended computer-based learning environment, helps students develop metacognitive strategies as they learn science topics. In order to better understand and improve the effect of adaptive scaffolding on studen...
متن کاملScaffolding of small groups' metacognitive activities with an avatar
Metacognitive scaffolding in a computer-supported learning environment can influence students' metacognitive activities, metacognitive knowledge and domain knowledge. In this study we analyze how metacognitive activities mediate the relationships between different avatar scaffolds on students' learning. Multivariate, multilevel analysis of the 51,339 conversation turns by 54 elementary school s...

متن کاملDo Learning by Teaching Environments with Metacognitive Support Help Students Develop Better Learning Behaviors?
We have developed Teachable Agent environments that use learning by teaching with metacognitive support to help middle school students learn about complex science topics. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach, we have run studies that compare three systems where (i) students are taught by an agent, (ii) students teach a computer agent, and (iii) students teach a computer agent and r...
