The 1999 Heineman Prize Address Integrable Models in Statistical Mechanics: the Hidden Eld with Unsolved Problems
نویسنده
چکیده
In the past 30 years there have been extensive discoveries in the theory of integrable statistical mechanical models including the discovery of non-linear diierential equations for Ising model correlation functions, the theory of random impurities, level crossing transitions in the chiral Potts model and the use of Rogers-Ramanujan identities to generalize our concepts of Bose/Fermi statistics. Each of these advances has led to the further discovery of major unsolved problems of great mathematical and physical interest. I will here discuss the mathematical advances, the physical insights and extraordinary lack of visibility of this eld of physics.

متن کاملSolved and unsolved problems in generalized notions of Connes amenability
We survey the recent investigations on (bounded, sequential) approximate Connes amenability and pseudo-Connes amenability for dual Banach algebras. We will discuss the core problems concerning these notions and address the signicance of any solutions to them to the development of the eld.
متن کاملZamolodchikov’s Tetrahedron Equation and Hidden Structure of Quantum Groups
The tetrahedron equation is a three-dimensional generalization of the Yang-Baxter equation. Its solutions define integrable three-dimensional lattice models of statistical mechanics and quantum field theory. Their integrability is not related to the size of the lattice, therefore the same solution of the tetrahedron equation defines different integrable models for different finite periodic cubi...
متن کاملPairwise Markov random fields and segmentation
The use of random elds, which allows one to take into account the spatial interaction among random variables in complex systems, becomes a frequent tool in numerous problems of statistical mechanics, spatial statistics, neural network modelling, and others. In particular, Markov random eld based techniques can be of exceptional eeciency in some image processing problems, like segmen-tation or e...
متن کاملMean Eld Methods for Classiication with Gaussian Processes
We discuss the application of TAP mean eld methods known from the Statistical Mechanics of disordered systems to Bayesian classii-cation models with Gaussian processes. In contrast to previous approaches , no knowledge about the distribution of inputs is needed. Simulation results for the Sonar data set are given.
