Performance of D-parameters in isolating meteor showers from the sporadic background

چکیده
It is often necessary to draw a division between meteor showers and the sporadic meteor complex in order to study these components of the meteoroid environment. Meteor showers persist for less than a season and are composed of members with a greater-thanaverage degree of orbital similarity. The level of orbital similarity is often quantified using so-called D-parameters; a D-parameter cutoff may be employed to define or extract a shower. Depending on the study, this cutoff value may be chosen based on the size of the data-set, the percentage of sporadic meteors within the data-set, or the inclination of the shower in question. We argue that the cutoff value should also reflect the strength of the shower compared to the local sporadic background. We therefore present a method for determining, on a per-shower basis, the D-parameter cutoff that limits the false-positive rate to an acceptable percentage. If the false-positive rate exceeds this percentage regardless of cutoff value, we deem the shower to be undetectable in our data. We apply this method to optical meteor observations from the NASA All-Sky and Southern Ontario Meteor Networks and present the detectable meteor showers and their characteristics. https://ntrs.nasa.gov/search.jsp?R=20160006996 2018-04-09T08:09:11+00:00Z

All-sky interferometric meteor radar meteoroid speed estimation using the Fresnel transform
Fresnel transform meteor speed estimation is investigated. A spectral based technique is developed allowing the transform to be applied at low temporal sampling rates. Simulations are used to compare meteoroid speeds determined using the Fresnel transform and alternative techniques, confirming that the Fresnel transform produces the most accurate meteoroid speed estimates for high effective pul...
متن کاملAn artificial meteors database as a test for the presence of weak showers
We have constructed an artificial meteor database resembling in all details the real sample collected by the observers of the Comets and Meteors Workshop in the years 1996-1999. The artificial database includes the sporadic meteors and also events from the following showers: Perseids, Aquarid complex, α-Capricornids, July Pegasids and Sagittarids. This database was searched for the presence of ...
متن کاملLong-Term Continuous Double Station Observation of Faint Meteor Showers
Meteor detection and analysis is an essential topic in the field of astronomy. In this paper, a high-sensitivity and high-time-resolution imaging device for the detection of faint meteoric events is presented. The instrument is based on a fast CCD camera and an image intensifier. Two such instruments form a double-station observation network. The MAIA (Meteor Automatic Imager and Analyzer) syst...
متن کاملThe mesospheric metal layer topside: a possible connection to meteoroids
In the past, many studies have been carried out to demonstrate the influence of meteoroids on the atmospheric metal layer, observed roughly in the altitude range 80–105 km. Even with the capability of present day resonance lidars to measure metal densities within single meteor trails, it has been difficult to prove any influence of meteors on the average metal layer. In contrast to approaches t...
متن کاملThe Dynamics of Low-Perihelion Meteoroid Streams
The Canadian Meteor Orbit Radar (CMOR) has collected information on a number of weak meteor showers that have not been well characterized in the literature. A subsample of these showers (1) do not show a strong orbital resemblance to any known comets or asteroids, (2) have highly inclined orbits, (3) are at low perihelion distances ( 1 AU) and (4) are at small semimajor axes (\2 AU). Though one...
