Decreased temperature in the tarsal conjunctiva may play a role in meibomian gland

Both the upper and lower tarsal conjunctival temperatures had a significant negative correlation with the ocular symptom score (R= 0.7325, P .001; R= 0.6356, P .001, respectively), eyelid margin score (R= 0.6126, P .001; R= 0.4707, P=.004, respectively), superficial punctate keratopathy score (R= 0.5705, P .001; R= 0.5281, P=.001, respectively), meibum score (R= 0.6408, P .001; R= 0.6083, P .001, respectively), and meibo-score (R = 0.6521, P .001; R= 0.5207, P=.001, respectively). The mean (SD) intraexaminer coefficients of variation for measurements at the center of the cornea, the upper tarsal conjunctiva, and the lower tarsal conjunctiva were 0.44% (0.28%), 0.46% (0.22%), and 0.55% (0.21%), respectively.
