چکیده

In this paper, a new method of dual-Doppler radar wind analysis based on a three-dimensional variational data assimilation (3DVAR) approach is proposed. In it, a cost function, including background term and radial observation term, is minimized through a limited memory, quasi-Newton conjugate-gradient algorithm with the mass continuity equation imposed as a weak constraint. In the method, the background error covariance matrix, though simple in this case, is modeled by a recursive filter. Furthermore, the square root of this matrix is used to precondition the minimization problem. The current method is applied to Doppler radar observation of a supercell storm, and the analysis results are compared to a conceptual model and previous research. It is shown that the horizontal circulations, both within and around the storms, as well as the strong updraft and the associated downdraft, are well analyzed. Because no explicit integration of the anelastic mass continuity equation is involved, error accumulation associated with such integration is avoided. As a result, the method is less sensitive to the vertical boundary uncertainties.

A Variational Method for the Analysis of Three-Dimensional Wind Fields from Two Doppler Radars

This paper proposes a new method of dual-Doppler radar analysis based on a variational approach. In it, a cost function, defined as the distance between the analysis and the observations at the data points, is minimized through a limited memory, quasi-Newton conjugate gradient algorithm with the mass continuity equation imposed as a weak constraint. The analysis is performed in Cartesian space....

A Novel Method for Detecting Targets on Inactive Radars Using an Adaptive Processing on the Ambiguity Function (RESEARCH NOTE)

In this paper a novel method for detecting targets in inactive radars is presented. In this method, the time history of cellsof the ambiguity function is used for detection. For this purpose, the cell history is considered as a random field. Then, using adaptive filter, the string time of the desired target are separated from the string time of noise and clusters in the environment. In order to...

J1j.4 Multiple Doppler Wind Analysis and Assimilation via 3dvar Using Simulated Observations of the Planned Casa Network and Wsr-88d Radars

The advantages of using Doppler weather radar to track and forecast mesoscale severe weather events are widely known to both meteorologists and the public. With the use of Doppler radar, meteorologists can provide better information to the public, ultimately saving lives and property, by remotely observing the internal structure of thunderstorms at high resolution. Despite its highly advanced c...

Variational Analysis of Over-sampled Dual-Doppler Radial Velocity Data and Application to the Analysis of Tornado Circulations

For the detection of severe weather phenomena such as tornados, mesocyclones, and strong wind shear, the azimuthal resolution of radial velocity measurements is more important. The typical azimuthal resolutions of 1° for the Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) radars and of 2° for the planned Center for Collaborative Adaptive Sensing of Atmosphere (CASA) radars are not sufficient ...

Adaptive Thresholding in Marine RADARs

In order to detect targets upon sea surface or near it, marine radars should be capable of distinguishing signals of target reflections from the sea clutter. Our proposed method in this paper relates to detection of dissimilar marine targets in an inhomogeneous environment with clutter and non-stationary noises, and is based on adaptive thresholding determination methods. The variance and t...
