Navigating Indoor with Maps: Representations and Processes
نویسندگان
چکیده
Novice participants were given a schematic map of a multilevel building and performed a series of wayfinding tasks. Consistent with previous research, we found a mix of wayfinding strategies adopted by participants. Further analysis showed that participants incrementally developed and used mental representations of the building by integrating perceptual cues and memories of visited locations with salient features and landmarks represented on the schematic maps. The formation and use of mental representations was found to correlate with spatial ability – participants with better spatial ability would more likely use mental representation to infer relative locations of landmarks and to derive directional guidance for navigation. As a result, the routes chosen were better than those who predominately rely on deictic references to the schematic maps and environment cues.

Vertical Colour Maps - A Data-Independent Alternative to Floor-Plan Maps
Location sharing in indoor environments is limited by the sparse availability of indoor positioning and lack of geographical building data. Recently, several solutions have begun to implement digital maps for use in indoor space. The map design is often a variant of floor-plan maps. Whereas massive databases and GIS exist for outdoor use, the majority of indoor environments are not yet availabl...
متن کاملVisually Augmented POMDP for Indoor Robot Navigation
This paper presents a new approach to robustly track a robot’s location in indoor environments using a partially observable Markov model. This model is constructed from topological representation of the environment, plus actuator an sensor characteristics. The system takes into account various sources of uncertainty to maintain a probability distribution over all possible locations of the robot...
متن کاملPatch Volumes: Multiple Fusion Volumes for Consistent RGB-D Modeling
Recent advances have allowed for the creation of dense, accurate 3D maps of indoor environments using RGB-D cameras. Some techniques are able to create large-scale maps, while others focus on accurate details using GPU-accelerated volumetric representations. In this work we describe patch volumes, a novel multiple-volume representation which enables the creation of globally consistent maps of i...
متن کاملA Multi-Strategy Spatial Navigation Model in a Text-Based Environment
Cognitive maps have been used to explain the cognitive processes underlying human spatial memory for several decades. Numerous theories have offered explanations regarding the structure of cognitive maps from the perspectives of spatial cognition, visual perception, and neuroscience. Within this literature, two representations of cognitive maps (map-like representations and route-based represen...
متن کاملLearning Spatial Information from Maps: Can Orientation-Specificity Be Overcome?*
Maps that facilitate learning and navigating through an environment will influence the form and content of cognitive representations developed of that environment. Cognitive representations derived from maps have been demonstrated to exhibit orientation-specificity, a bias toward the orientation at which the map was studied, while cognitive representations derived directly from the environment ...
