چکیده

User interfaces in Grid computing have tended to follow either a command-line or a portalbased approach. Command-line interfaces, such as provided by the Globus ToolkitTM, are flexible and powerful, but arcane. Portals deliver their functionality either through Web browsers, or through bespoke, stand-alone “fat clients”; they present friendlier interfaces to a restricted set of services. Despite its astonishing success in making computing accessible to a vast number of users, the desktop paradigm remains strangely neglected by the Grid community. We argue that the command-line and portal approaches have drawbacks which are retarding the uptake of the Grid, and motivate Grid-enabling the desktop itself. Finally, we describe the GridEnabled Desktop Environment (GRENADE) project, which is exploring the possibilities that arise when the functionality of the Globus Toolkit is integrated within the user’s desktop environment.

Grid-Enabled Desktop Environments: The GRENADE Project

Exisiting Grid middleware solutions have largely neglected to provide the type of desktopintegrated graphical user interfaces chosen by the vast majority of computer users. GRENADE tackles the issues associated with projecting the emerging fundamental activities of using the Grid onto the immensely successful graphical desktop paradigm. The first release of the GRENADE software demonstrates how...

Using Grid-Enabled Teleimmersive Spatial Decision Support Systems (TIDSS) to Visualize Uncertainty for Water Quality Protection in Agroecosystems

The purpose of this paper is to examine the way Grid computing resources enable teleimmersive spatial decision support systems (TIDSS). Our intent is to construct a link between GIS software and teleimmersive visualization tools in a TIDSS context using computational grids. As motivation for this research, we consider a TIDSS designed to support the analysis of water quality measurements in an ...

HPJava: Towards Programming Support for High-Performance Grid-Enabled Applications

We start seeing the authors’ HPspmd Programming Model 1 towards the programming support for HighPerformance Grid-Enabled Environments since the future grid computing systems will need to provide programming models. As a proper programming model for grid-enabled environments and applications, high performance on multi-processor systems is critical issue. We argue with simple experiments that we ...

Grid Economics: 10 Lessons from Finance

Today Grid technology is finding its way out of the academic incubator and into commercial environments. The interest in on-demand utility computing is larger then ever before in the industry and Grid tools are seen as an important enabler of this business model. The process of Grid commercialization inevitably brings financial issues to the fore. When multiple budget entities share resources, ...

A Novel Resource-Driven Job Allocation Scheme for Desktop Grid Environments

In this paper we propose a novel framework for the dynamic allocation of jobs in grid-like environments, in which such jobs are dispatched to the machines of the grid by a centralized scheduler. We apply a new, full resource-driven approach to the scheduling task: jobs are allocated and (possibly) relocated on the basis of the matching between their resource requirements and the characteristics...
