Basic support for information sharing

1. Overview In this brief position statement I will describe my own orientation towards the themes of this working group, and a project recently begun at GMD which I feel is relevant to these themes. As a system developer, the notion of a ‘common information space’ has certain connotations, and I will therefore elaborate on my own perspective of a CIS in the following section. Much of the activity in this area concerns the representation of working context , as an attempt to provide more effective awareness mechanisms, and I will discuss this notion of representing context in the next section. Finally I will give a brief overview of the Basic Support for Cooperative Work (BSCW) project, which is looking to develop simple facilities for information sharing and awareness, that are integrated with the tools, environments and organisational contexts that already exist.
