Influence of Diet on Digestive Microflora and Gut Health of the Chicken

چکیده
The poultry industry has been accompanied by the emergence of a large variety of pathogens and bacterial resistance due to the increase in production scales and the use of Antibiotic Growth Promoters (AGP). As a result, poultry become more sensitive to harmful bacteria such as Escherichia Coli, Salmonella spp., Clostridium perfringens and Campylobacter jejunum. There are considerable numbers of producers that depend on AGP in feed to overcome these diseases. With consumers pressure about the use of antibiotics in animal feed and its link to the increase of antibiotic resistant bacteria, the European Union has decided to ban the antibiotics as feed additives in January, 1 st 2006. In the US the poultry industry is facing a possible ban of antibiotic feed additives, and there is a growing interest in finding valuable alternatives to prevent diseases. Therefore, many activities were initiated to establish other substances with beneficial effects on animals via modification of the intestinal microflora. Among these alternatives to antibiotics are probiotics or direct-fed microbs (DFM). The effects of probiotic or DFM on gut health and performance in poultry is well documented. Several studies demonstrated an improvement in birds fed diets with probiotics in a challenge disease model. In addition several researches and data presented in this presentation suggest that probiotics have the potential to improve bird gut health and to overcome growing challenge in poultry production.

Effects of Canola Bioactive Peptides on Performance, Digestive Enzyme Activities, Nutrient Digestibility, Intestinal Morphology and Gut Microflora in Broiler Chickens
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of canola bioactive peptides (CBP) produced by enzymatic hydrolysis of canola meal on performance, digestive enzyme activity, nutrient digestibility, gut microflora and intestinal morphology of broiler chickens. A total of 250 one-day-old Ross 308 male broiler chicks were randomly allocated to 5 dietary treatments with 5 replicates of 10 ...
متن کاملEffect of Cereal Type and Enzyme Addition on Performance, Pancreatic Enzyme Activity, Intestinal Microflora and Gut Morphology of Broilers
The effects of grain and carbohydrase enzyme supplementation were investigated on digestive physiology of chickens. A total of 625 one-day-old chicks (Ross 308) were randomly assigned to five treatments in a completely randomized design. Treatments included two different types of grains (wheat, and barley) with or without a multi-carbohydrase supplement. A corn-based diet was also considered to...
متن کاملEfficacy of Different Blends of Essential Oils on Growth Performance, Blood Metabolites, Gut Microflora, and Meat Quality of Broilers
Background: The application of phytogenic additives in the form of essential oils have attracted considerable attention in poultry industry. OBJECTIVES: An experiment was conducted to evaluate effects of the blends of essential oils (EO) isolated from some medicinal plants including savory, thyme, fennel and rosemary on performance, blood metabolites, intestinal microflora, and meat quality of...
متن کاملStudy of Bacterial Diversity in Poultry Gut Using Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis
Bacteria play an important role in the initiation and progression of diseases (not only in disease but affect health status of individual). Populations of digestive microflora in chicken gut change with age and also affected by diet, stressors, and performance enhancers as well as in disease conditions. The aim of the pre-sent study was to know bacterial makeup in chicken gut, using denaturing ...
متن کاملThe Effect of Grape Seed Extract and Vitamin C Feed Supplements Carcass Characteristics, Gut Morphology and Ileal Microflora in Broiler Chickens Exposed to Chronic Heat Stress
The effects of dietary supplementation of grape seed extract (GSE) and vitamin C on carcass characteristics, gut morphology and ileal microflora in broiler chickens exposed to chronic heat stress were examined. Experimental diets included a control diet (without additive), 3 levels of GSE (150, 300, 450 mg/kg of diet), and vitamin C (300 mg/kg of diet). Each of the five diets was fed to 5 repli...

A diet for broiler chickens that provides the nutrients essential for maintenance and growth of the flock as a whole may also have chemical and physical properties which are detrimental to the processes of ingestion, digestion, absorption, transport and utilization of nutrients. The digestive capacity of the chicken can be modelled according to interactions between feed– related and bird–relate...
