Everything That Linguists Have Always Wanted to Know About Logic

چکیده
Most introductory courses on logic teach only the syntax of first-order predicate calculus and give a few simple proofs, usually of theorems in arithmetic. Advanced courses are taught in mathematics departments, where they lead to topics that have little or no application to linguistics. In one of the standard textbooks, Schoenfield (1967) explicitly states "Mathemat ical logic has always been closely connected with the philosophy of mathematics. I have generally avoided philosophical issues except when they were closely connected with the mathematical material" (p. iii). Schoenfield dismisses the relationship between language and logic with a few terse comments like "we introduce the symbol & to mean and" (p. 10). Given such logic books and courses, people studying natural language would find it hard to see any relevance to their interests. With this book, McCawley has done a great service in bringing together a wealth of material on the applications of logic to linguistics and philosophy.

Everything that Linguists have Always Wanted to Know about Connectionism *
This paper is meant to be an introduction to connectionism for linguists. It covers fundamentals of connectionism and applications of connectionism to human language processing. Because the first (and the last for some) question that linguists want to ask is “why bother with connectionism?” it would be appropriate to try to answer this question first. A quick and rather naive answer is that bot...

I want to discuss a certain argument for the claim that definite descriptions are ambiguous between a Russellian quantificational interpretation and a predicational interpretation.1 The argument is found in James McCawley’s (1981) book Everything Linguists Have Always Wanted to Know about Logic (but were ashamed to ask). The argument has also been resuscitated by Richard Larson and Gabriel Sega...

Everything You Always Wanted to Know about Sex Discrimination Earlier literature on the gender pay gap has taught us that occupations matter and so do firms. However, the role of the firm has received little scrutiny; occupations have most often been coded in a rather aggregate way, lumping together different jobs; and the use of samples of workers prevents any reliable determination of either ...
