چکیده

This paper proposes the use of a wide-area le system for storing and retrieving documents. We demonstrate that most of the functionality of the World-Wide Web (WWW) information service can be provided by storing documents in AFS. The approach addresses several performance problems experienced by WWW servers and clients, such as increased server and network load, network latency and inadequate security. In addition, the mechanism demonstrates the value of a global, general purpose le sharing system and the advantage of layering existing technologies.

Power Differential based Wide Area Protection

Current differential based wide area protection (WAP) has recently been proposed as a technique to increase the reliability of protection systems. It increases system stability and can prevent large contingencies such as cascading outages and blackouts. This paper describes how power differential protection (PDP) can be used within a WAP and shows that the algorithm operates correctly for a...

Using context to assist in personal file retrieval

Personal data is growing at ever increasing rates, fueled by a growing market for personal computing solutions and dramatic growth of available storage space on these platforms. Users, no longer limited in what they can store, are now faced with the problem of organizing their data such that they can find it again later. Unfortunately, as data sets grow the complexity of organizing these sets a...

Explaining World Wide Web Traffic Self-Similarity

Recently the notion of self-similarity has been shown to apply to wide-area and local-area network traffic. In this paper we examine the mechanisms that give rise to self-similar network traffic. We present an explanation for traffic self-similarity by using a particular subset of wide area traffic: traffic due to the World Wide Web (WWW). Using an extensive set of traces of actual user executi...

Searching the World-Wide Web Using Signature Files

A problem conamonly faced by users of the World-Wide Web (WWW) is forgetting the path traversed to reach a previously read document. SWISS (Seeking WorldWide Web Information Using a Signature File Search) is a system designed to alleviate this ’lost document problem’ by incrementally saving the contents of visited documents in a signature file index. SWISS allows the user to retrieve a previous...
