چکیده

This paper presents the developmental fundamental frequency (F0) data from Cantonesespeaking pre-adolescent children, male and female. Results of frequency analysis of the speech data from children of nine age groups from 4 to 12 years show that (i) there is an overall drop in F0 across the nine age groups of both genders and a larger change for male than female children; (ii) a significant difference in F0 between male and female children emerges at age 12 as a result of a large F0 drop in male but not female children; (iii) the F0 for male children of age 12 is half an octave higher than that for male adults, but the 12-yearold female children reach the adult-like F0 pattern; and (iv) the patterns of developmental F0 between Cantonese-speaking and English-speaking children are similar, except for the differences in the F0 drop between age 5 and age 6 and in the 12-yearold male children between the two languages.

Gender-related Frequency Characteristics in Children’s Speech

This study investigates the two frequency characteristics, F0 and F1F2, of the speech of Cantonese children, male and female, of nine age groups from 4 to 12. The F0 data on the Cantonese tones [55 33 22] from children show that (i) the patterns of the age-related decrease in F0 are similar between male and female children before age 12; (ii) at age 12, there is a large drop in F0 in male child...

Phonological awareness of Cantonese-speaking pre-school children with cochlear implants.

The study investigated the phonological awareness abilities of Cantonese-speaking pre-schoolers with cochlear implants. Participants were 15 Cantonese-speaking children with cochlear implants (CIs) aged 3.08-6.10, chronological-age-matched with 15 children with normal hearing. Each participant performed 10 tasks evaluating different levels of phonological awareness abilities and phonological kn...

Unequal effects of speech and nonspeech contexts on the perceptual normalization of Cantonese level tones.

Context is important for recovering language information from talker-induced variability in acoustic signals. In tone perception, previous studies reported similar effects of speech and nonspeech contexts in Mandarin, supporting a general perceptual mechanism underlying tone normalization. However, no supportive evidence was obtained in Cantonese, also a tone language. Moreover, no study has co...

Use of developmental language scales in Chinese children.

The Reynell Developmental Language Scale (RDLS) and Symbolic Play Test (SPT) have been useful language tests for assessing the language age of children. Both tests have been validated in English-speaking children. However, there have been no studies conducted for Chinese children, whether Mandarin (Northerners) or Cantonese (Southerners) is used as the main dialect. As the Chinese population is...

Realization of Cantonese Rising Tones under Different Speaking Rates

The two Cantonese rising tones, high-rising and low/mid-low rising tones, are found to maintain their distinct slopes of F0(fundamental frequency)-rise and offset F0 under different speaking rates. This suggests the two as possible acoustic cues for rising tone discrimination. The rising contours, under whichever speaking rate, reside in area temporally near the syllable offset. Furthermore, th...
