چکیده

Figure 1. Recording of single neurons in the rodent hippocampal system. (A) A typical laboratory experimental setup for recording spatially sensitive neurons in exploring animals. The animals are implanted with moveable microelectrodes that are situated in the brain region of interest. The electrodes are attached to a tiny drive mechanism that allows the experimenter to advance the electrodes through the brain in small steps of a few tens of microns. The implant can be attached to recording equipment via a headstage (not shown), which stabilizes and boosts the signal and allows it to be transmitted through a long, thin, lightweight cable without loss of signal or gain of electrical noise. Meanwhile, an overhead camera monitors the position of the animal, usually via an LED attached to the headstage. In a typical experiment the animal will forage for food over the surface of the arena while the ongoing activity of the neurons is recorded: sometimes it may perform a navigation task. (B) Schematic of the rat brain, showing the hippocampus and surrounding cortices. (Adapted from Furtak et al. (2007).) Place, space and memory cells

A Model for Identifying and Enhancing the Sense of Place and Collective Memories (Case Study: Dez river)

The lack of sense of belonging to place in urban spaces is one of the problems widely stated. There are objective and subjective factors in space that create sense of place. The combined effect of these factors create meaning for place and endow the environment with identity. This research seeks to find the relationship between the objective and subjective factors of space and the levels of sen...

A model of episodic memory: mental time travel along encoded trajectories using grid cells.

The definition of episodic memory includes the concept of mental time travel: the ability to re-experience a previously experienced trajectory through continuous dimensions of space and time, and to recall specific events or stimuli along this trajectory. Lesions of the hippocampus and entorhinal cortex impair human episodic memory function and impair rat performance in tasks that could be solv...

Background : Evidence indicates that the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) in the brain is probably invoemotional learning. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the role of OFC on spatial memory in dark and light area in rotation arena in place avoidance learning model. Material and methods : Long-Evans strain rats (280-300gr) were surgically implanted bilaterlved in ally with cannulae aimed at...

Impairments in spatial representations and rhythmic coordination of place cells in the 3xTg mouse model of Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an irreversible and highly progressive neurodegenerative disease. Clinically, patients with AD display impairments in episodic and spatial memory. However, the underlying neuronal dysfunctions that result in these impairments remain poorly understood. The hippocampus is crucial for spatial and episodic memory, and thus we tested the hypothesis that abnormal neuronal ...

Hippocampus as a memory map: synaptic plasticity and memory encoding by hippocampal neurons.

Hippocampal cells contribute to memory by rapidly encoding information about the perceptual and behavioral structure of experience. This paper describes two complementary experimental approaches that illustrate two important mechanisms that confer these properties to hippocampal cells: (1) Enduring spatial memory and stable place fields each depend upon synaptic plasticity mechanisms that norma...

Remembrance of futures past.

Much behavioural and physiological evidence suggests that the hippocampus encodes space. Puzzlingly, however, hippocampal damage also disrupts episodic memory. A recent study shows how these two faculties might be related, finding that the spatial firing of hippocampal 'place cells' is sometimes modulated by what the animal has recently done or what it will do next. Thus, the cells encode somet...
