Operation decomposition for freeform surface features in process planning
نویسندگان
چکیده
Machining operations for freeform surface features usually include roughing, ®nishing for the bottom surface, tapering, and corner rounding. Strategies and algorithms to decompose the overall task into these operations are presented. The decomposition aims at minimizing machining time within the constraints of the speci®ed surface roughness and tolerance, and machine tool safety. The roughing operation can be further decomposed into sub-operations for multiple tools. There are two strategies to decompose the ®nishing operation into suboperations: one is based on multiple tools and another is based on multiple tool path patterns. The approaches to select the optimal decomposition values (tool diameters, surface slopes) that minimize machining time are presented. These algorithms are being integrated into a rapid-prototyping service for web-based machining. Design for manufacturability and maximizing process automation are the key priorities in process planning and operation decomposition. q 2001 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.

Automated Layer Decomposition for Additive/Subtractive Solid Freeform Fabrication
The new additive/subtractive technology (Shape Deposition Manufacturing) enhances Solid Freeform Fabrication (SFF) capability in producing near net-shape surface finish. This technology also builds parts in fewer layers compared with conventional layered manufacturing technology. However, to decompose a part into freeform layers usually requires expensive geometric computation. Also, to plan bu...
متن کاملRecognition of Freeform Surface Machining Features
This paper describes a method of machining feature recognition from a freeform surface based on the relationship between unique machining patches and critical points on a component’s surface. The method uses Morse theory to extract critical surface points by defining a scalar function on the freeform surface. Features are defined by region growing between the critical points using a tool path g...

Computer Controlled Ultra-precision Polishing (CCUP) provides an enabling technology for machining freeform components with optical surface quality (i.e., nanometer surface roughness and sub-micrometer or accuracy). It can be used to machine difficult-to-machine materials such as optical glass which are not amenable for diamond machining. Due to the complexity of material removal mechanism in t...

Additive/Subtractive Solid Freeform Fabrication (SFF) integrates material addition (deposition) and removal (machining) to build up three-dimensional objects incrementally. This class of processes offers sophisticated design flexibility with engineering materials, three-dimensional layer building, and the ability to fabricate complex engineering devices and multi-material objects. However, plan...
