Thermodynamics of Lithium Intercalation into Graphites and Disordered Carbons

چکیده
The temperature dependence of the open-circuit potential of lithium half-cells was measured for electrodes of carbon materials having different amounts of structural disorder. The entropy of lithium intercalation, DS , and enthalpy of intercalation, DH , were determined over a broad range of lithium concentrations. For the disordered carbons, DS is small. For graphite, an initially large DS decreases with lithium concentration, becomes negative, and then shows two plateaus associated with the formation of intercalation compounds. For all carbons DH is negative, and decreases in magnitude with increased lithium concentration. For lithium concentrations less than x 5 0.5 in LixC6 , for the disordered carbons the magnitude of DH is significantly more negative than for graphite ~i.e., intercalation is more exothermic!. The measurements of DH provide an energy spectrum of chemical environments for lithium. This spectrum can be used to understand some of the concentration dependence of configurational entropy, but the negative values of DS require another contribution to entropy, perhaps vibrational in origin. © 2004 The Electrochemical Society. @DOI: 10.1149/1.1646152# All rights reserved.

Carbon-based anodes show many promising properties in lithium-ion rechargeable batteries. So-called ‘disordered carbons’ are characterized by a substantial amount of residual hydrogen, and exhibit large Li uptake capacities. We have employed a variety of neutron scattering techniques, coupled with computer simulations, to study the composition, local atomic structure, and vibrational dynamics o...
متن کاملEffect of turbostratic disorder in graphitic carbon hosts on the intercalation of lithium.
The intercalation of lithium into graphite was discovered in the 1950's.' After that, many studies focused on the staged phases ' that are formed during lithium intercalation in graphite and in graphitic carbon types. Safran concluded that the staging phenomenon is the result of the competition between interlayer repulsive and in-plane attractive interactions between the intercalated lithium. S...

Intercalation of lithium into Ag-CNTs sample is reported here. We have used a nano-porous silver foam as a frame for deposition of the CNTs inside the pores by electrophoresis deposition (EPD) technique. By using chronopotentiometry method, we have noticed that the Li storage capacity of the prepared Ag-CNTs electrode was improved noticeably in comparison with literature. ...
