چکیده

The marine chemistry of iodine has been studied in the marine lake, Mir, regarded as a natural reactor situated in the karstificated carbonate rocks of the Croatian Adriatic coast. The investigation covered the major variables: salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH and alkalinity, some nutrients, organic carbon, and iodide, iodate and organic-I. Lake Mir was found to be meso-trophic, with dynamic nutrient cycling of a magnitude usually associated with the temperate zone but within a Mediterranean clime. An essentially U-shaped pattern exists in the plot of nutrient concentration versus time for the JuneeNovember period studied. Together, the major variables and the nutrient chemistry confirm that Lake Mir is essentially isolated from the nearby (90 m) Adriatic seawater, and this also may explain the meso-trophic nature of the lake, with dry and wet deposition as the source of the extra nutrient. It is of note that iodate was essentially absent from Mir during the sampling period. This appears to be consistent with iodine’s behaviour in the oceans in general, where iodate is reduced generally as a result of the presence of the biota. The chemistry of iodine in Lake Mir is consequently dominated by changes in iodide and organic-I concentrations, with the latter at higher concentrations than those found in seawater. Even so, the total iodine concentration in Mir is only about one-quarter of that in the adjacent Adriatic seawater, and again it is argued that this is probably a function of Lake Mir’s isolation. 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Analysis of iodide and iodate in Lake Mead, Nevada using a headspace derivatization gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.

We report here a derivatization headspace method for the analysis of inorganic iodine in water. Samples from Lake Mead, the Las Vegas Wash, and from Las Vegas tap water were examined. Lake Mead and the Las Vegas Wash contained a mixture of both iodide and iodate. The average concentration of total inorganic iodine (TII) for Lake Mead was approximately 90 nM with an iodide-to-iodate ratio of app...

Iodate and Iodide Distributions in the Waters of a Stratified Estuary

Speciation and distribution of inorganic iodine in the highly stratified Krka estuary (east coast of the Adriatic Sea) were investigated in the period from December 2000 to April 2001. Conservative behavior of total inorganic iodine was confirmed during the investigated period, but significant temporal and longitudinal variations were also observed. Concentrations of iodate and iodide were less...

The potential role of kelp forests on iodine speciation in coastal seawater

Kelps have a major role in marine and atmospheric iodine cycling in the coastal zone of temperate regions, with potential wide-ranging impacts on ozone destruction in the coastal marine boundary layer. However, little is known about the impact of kelp forests on iodine speciation in coastal sea water. To address this, we examined iodide and iodate concentrations in seawater in and around a gian...

Circumstantial evidence in support of org-I as a component of the marine aerosol arising from a study of marine foams

A study of foams formed on the marine Lake Mir, Croatia, and elsewhere on the same coast demonstrates, for the first time, that they are fractionated (enrichened) in org-I by up to 630 times relative to the water from which they form. The results are consistent with an I/C mole ratio for in-situ organic matter. Foams created artificially in the laboratory from natural samples of water from Lake...

Iodine assimilation by marine diatoms and other phytoplankton in nitrate-replete conditions

Several marine phytoplankton species, primarily diatoms, were examined for the accumulation of iodide (10 species) and iodate (9 species) using radioactive iodine-125 in f/2 artificial seawater, a nitrate-enriched medium. Iodide accumulation (net uptake) rates were variable, and diatoms exhibited the highest rates. Emiliania huxleyi and Synechococcus sp. did not accumulate iodide. Accumulation ...
