Nonlinear Drillstring Dynamics Analysis

چکیده
This paper studies the dynamical response of a rotary drilling system with a drag bit, using a lumped parameter model that takes into consideration the axial and torsional vibration modes of the bit. These vibrations are coupled through a bit-rock interaction law. At the bit-rock interface, the cutting process introduces a state-dependent delay, while the frictional process is responsible for discontinuous right-hand sides in the equations governing the motion of the bit. This complex system is characterized by a fast axial dynamics compared to the slow torsional dynamics. A dimensionless formulation exhibits a large parameter in the axial equation, enabling a two-time-scales analysis that uses a combination of averaging methods and a singular perturbation approach. An approximate model of the decoupled axial dynamics permits us to derive a pseudoanalytical expression of the solution of the axial equation. Its averaged behavior influences the slow torsional dynamics by generating an apparent velocity weakening friction law that has been proposed empirically in earlier work. The analytical expression of the solution of the axial dynamics is used to derive an approximate analytical expression of the velocity weakening friction law related to the physical parameters of the system. This expression can be used to provide recommendations on the operating parameters and the drillstring or the bit design in order to reduce the amplitude of the torsional vibrations. Moreover, it is an appropriate candidate model to replace empirical friction laws encountered in torsional models used for control.

Modelling and Analysis of Stick-slip Behaviour in a Drillstring under Dry Friction
Stick-slip vibrations present at the bottom hole assembly (BHA) of a generic oilwell drillstring subject to dry friction are studied. Different nonlinear differential equations-based models of a drillstring are analyzed. The drillstring models presented are oriented to avoid simulation problems due to the discontinuities originated by the presence of dry friction. The influence of different dri...

This work intends to analyze the nonlinear stochastic dynamics of drillstrings in horizontal configuration. For this purpose, it considers a beam theory, with effects of rotatory inertia and shear deformation, which is capable of reproducing the large displacements that the beam undergoes. The friction and shock effects, due to beam/borehole wall transversal impacts, as well as the force and to...
متن کاملCoupled transverse vibration modeling of drillstrings subjected to torque and spatially varying axial
Predicting and mitigating unwanted vibration of drillstrings is an important subject for oil drilling companies. Uncontrolled vibrations cause premature failure of the drillstring and associated components. The drillstring is a long slender structure that vibrates in three primary coupled modes: torsional, axial and transverse. Among these coupled modes, the transverse mode is the major cause o...

Friction appears in all mechanical systems and has a significant impact on control. This paper presents simple but effective nonlinear friction compensation method for a drillstring system, by considering the stickslip motion of the bit on the bottom hole assembly (BHA) in oil wells. Due to nonlinear problem at nearzero velocity where the torque exerted on bit is a function of the bit speed, th...

In order to understand critical vibrations of a drill bit such as stick-slip and bit-bounce and their wave propagation characteristics through a drillstring system, it is critical to model the torsional, longitudinal, and flexural waves. The objective is to model these waves propagating through the drillstring in a computationally efficient way. Here, a modeling method based on an acoustic tran...
