The dynamic compressive behavior of beryllium bearing bulk metallic glasses

چکیده
In 1993, a new beryllium bearing bulk metallic glass with the nominal composition of Zr41.25Ti13.75Cu12.5Ni10Be22.5 was discovered at Caltech. This metallic glass can be cast as cylindrical rods as large as 16 mm in diameter, which permitted specimens to be fabricated with geometries suitable for dynamic testing. For the first time, the dynamic compressive yield behavior of a metallic glass was characterized at strain rates of 102 to 104ys by using the split Hopkinson pressure bar. A high-speed infrared thermal detector was also used to determine if adiabatic heating occurred during dynamic deformation of the metallic glass. From these tests it appears that the yield stress of the metallic glass is insensitive to strain rate and no adiabatic heating occurs before yielding.

A class of beryllium-bearing bulk metallic glass alloys has recently been developed at the California Institute of Technology (1). These alloys can be fabricated in the form of large ingots with minimum dimensions on the order of centimeters, which allows valid mechanical tests to be performed on these materials. Such tests were not formerly possible given the small dimensions of earlier metall...

The mechanical properties of a new Fe41Co7Cr15Mo14Y2C15B6 bulk glassy alloy were studied by impact bending, compression, and hardness tests carried out at room temperature. The compressive fracture strength, elastic strain to fracture, Young’s modulus and Vickers hardness were measured to be 3.5 GPa, 1.5%, 265 GPa, and 1253 kg mm, respectively. The fracture mode of the glassy alloy under uniaxi...

Bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) deform irreversibly through shear banding manifested as serrated-flow behavior during compressive tests. The strain-rate-dependent plasticity under uniaxial compression at the strain rates of 2 × 10, 2 × 10, and 2 × 10·s in a Pd-based BMG is investigated. The serrated flow behavior is not observed in the stress-strain curve at the strain rate of 2 × 10·s. However, t...

Two Niand Cu-free bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) of Zr65Pd17:5Fe10Al7:5 and Zr65Pd12:5Ag5Fe10Al7:5, with a critical casting diameter of 6mm and a compressive strength above 1500MPa, were developed. While the Zr65Pd17:5Fe10Al7:5 alloy showed little plastic strain before fracture, the Zr65Pd12:5Ag5Fe10Al7:5 alloy exhibited much larger plasticity by the relatively stable, intermittent propagation of...
