Block’s Overflow Argument

چکیده
Pacific © 2015 Pacific P Abstract: This article challenges Block’s ‘overflow argument’ for the conclusion that phenomenal consciousness and access-consciousness are distinct. It shows that the data can be explained just as well (or better) in terms of a distinction between contents that are made globally accessible through bottom–up sensory stimulation and those that are sustained and made available in working memory through top-down attention.

Fink, S. (2015). Phenomenal Precision and Some Possible Pitfalls - A Commentary on Ned Block
Ground Representationism is the position that for each phenomenal feature there is a representational feature that accounts for it. Against this thesis, Ned Block has provided an intricate argument that rests on the notion of “phenomenal precision”: the phenomenal precision of a percept may change at a different rate from its representational counterpart. If so, there is then no representationa...
متن کاملIs the Turing Test Good Enough? The Fallacy of Resource-Unbounded Intelligence
This goal of this paper is to defend the plausibility of the argument that passing the Turing test is a sufficient condition for the presence of intelligence. To this effect, we put forth new objections to two famous counter-arguments: Searle’s ”Chinese Room” and Block’s ”Aunt Bertha.” We take Searle’s argument to consist of two points: 1) intelligence is not merely an ability to manipulate for...
متن کاملCan Intentionalism Explain How Attention Affects Appearances?
Recent psychological research shows that attention affects appearances. An “attended item looks bigger, faster, earlier, more saturated, stripier.” (Block 2010, p. 41). What is the significance of these findings? Ned Block has argued that they undermine representationism, roughly the view that the phenomenal character of perception is determined by its representational content. My first goal in...

متن کاملConsciousness doesn't overflow cognition
Theories of consciousness can be separated into those that see it as cognitive in nature, or as an aspect of cognitive functioning, and those that see consciousness as importantly distinct from any kind of cognitive functioning. One version of the former kind of theory is the higherorder-thought theory of consciousness. This family of theories posits a fundamental role for cognitive states, hig...
