Effect of open microchannel geometry on pool boiling enhancement

چکیده
Pool boiling enhancement through surface modification has garnered the attention of many researchers for extending the limits of heat flux dissipation. Simulated copper chips were used in a pool boiling setup with water boiling at atmospheric pressure. Heat transfer performance of different microchanneled surfaces was compared to that of a plain surface. The results of the study showed that the mechanism at work for the bubble dynamics was the ability of the surface to pull liquid through the channels to induce heat transfer. Geometrical trends were observed from the study as well with the wider and deeper channels and thinner finned surfaces showing the best heat transfer results. Without reaching the critical heat flux condition, the best performing chip dissipated a heat flux of 244 W/cm corresponding to a record heat transfer coefficient of 269 kW/m K. 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Pool Boiling Heat Transfer Enhancement Through Nanostructures on Silicon Microchannels
Uniform silicon nanowires (SiNW) were successfully fabricated on the top, bottom, and sidewall surfaces of silicon microchannels by using a two-step electroless etching process. Different microchannel patterns with the channel width from 100 to 300 lm were first fabricated in a 10 mm 10 mm silicon chip and then covered by SiNW with an average height of 10–20 lm. The effects of the microchannel ...

Pool boiling is of interest in high heat flux applications because of its potential for removing large amount of heat resulting from the latent heat of evaporation and little pressure drop penalty for circulating coolant through the system. However, the heat transfer performance of pool boiling systems is not adequate to match the cooling ability provided by enhanced microchannels operating und...
