Macro-micro analysis method for estimating strong motion distribution in virtual metropolis

An objective of earthquake study is to estimate possible disaster when a large earthquake hits a metropolis. The disaster is the accumulation of buildings and structures. Thus, a numerical simulation method must compute the strong motion with the spatial and temporal resolution high enough to calculate structural responses during the quake and to evaluate their damages. Due to the advancement of computer hardware and software, it is not a dream to construct a virtual city using available information of underground structures and buildings. The authors are developing a macro-micro analysis method, which is aimed to estimate strong motion with high resolution for such a virtual city.
