The pure-line hybrid concept traces its roots back to experiments on heterosis and its complement in- breeding conducted by SHULL (1908, 1909) at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories in New York, and EAST

چکیده
Today the concept of heterotic groups and patterns is fundamental to hybrid breeding theory and practice. Our objectives were to (i) review various hypotheses on the causes of heterosis in maize and on the experimental evidence supporting or refuting them, (ii) examine advantages and disadvantages of the concept of heterotic groups and patterns, (iii) describe the status of heterotic patterns in different regions, and (iv) discuss strategies for the establishment of heterotic patterns. Various hypotheses explaining the phenomenon of heterosis were reviewed. Although many hypotheses have been suggested, the genetical, physiological, and biochemical bases of heterosis still remain largely unexplained. Theoretical and experimental arguments are given suggesting that grouping of germplasm into divergent heterotic groups is advantageous due to (i) a higher mean heterosis and hybrid performance and (ii) a reduced specific combining ability (SCA) variance and a lower ratio of SCA to general combining ability (GCA) variance. Thus early testing becomes more effective and superior hybrids can be identified and selected mainly based on their prediction from GCA effects. The status of heterotic patterns were described for the U.S. Corn Belt, Central Europe, Japan, China, and tropical maize growing regions. While in most regions heterotic patterns have been established, grouping failed in the tropical germplasm due to the complex population structure. Two strategies to establish heterotic groups were discussed. Further research is required incorporating recent advances on the genetic architecture of quantitative traits and on the genetic basis of heterosis to develop optimal procedures for establishing and maintaining heterotic patterns.

George H. Shull, while working as a corn geneticist at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory from 1904 to 1915, observed that when two different pure-bred lines of corn were crossbred the resulting progeny exhibited physical traits superior to those of the parents (Glass, 2010). Shull described the offspring of pure-bred crosses as having increased heartiness, size, fruitfulness, speed of developme...

IN early 1908, George Harrison Shull, then at the treatment was thorough, careful, and thoughtful. His Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, published a paper book, The Effects of Cross and Self Fertilization in the Vegetable with the unimposing title, “The composition of a field Kingdom, was published in 1876. Its 490 pages include of maize.” This marked the beginning of the exploitamyriad examples, ...

A stimulation resulting from hybridization in both plants and animals has long been recognized. The increased growth as the result of crossing is so common an occurrence that it is probably familiar to everyone who has made any hybridization experiments. This stimulation, variously spoken of as “hybrid vigor,” stimulus due to heterozygosis, heterosis, etc., was clearly established as an organic...

Heterosis, one of the most important biological phenomena, refers to the phenotypic superiority of a hybrid over its genetically diverse parents with respect to many traits such as biomass, growth rate and yield. Despite its successful application in breeding and agronomic production of many crop and animal varieties, the molecular basis of heterosis remains elusive. The classic genetic explana...

An important step in plant breeding programs is identification of parents that are geneticallydistant from each other, to find crossing combinations with better prospects of hybrid vigor. Thepotential of identifying genetically distant parents depends on genetic diversity of population. 58 linesof rice from diverse origins have been employed to study genetic variation in order to identify themo...
