Reliabilism, Stability, and the Value of Knowledge
نویسنده
چکیده
According to reliabilism, knowledge is basically true belief acquired through a reliable process. Many epistemologists have argued recently that reliabilism fails to accommodate our pre-systematic judgment that knowledge is more valuable than mere true belief. The paper pinpoints where this so-called swamping argument goes wrong. It is then argued that true beliefs that are reliably acquired are more stable and therefore more valuable for the purposes of guiding practical action over time. Finally, it is suggested that the stability thesis can, to some extent, bridge the gulf between externalist and internalist approaches to epistemology. While knowledge may be best defined in externalist terms, the full realization of its value requires the satisfaction of an internalist condition of track-keeping stating that people maintain a record of how their beliefs were acquired.

Unreliable Knowledge
There is a virtual consensus in contemporary epistemology that knowledge must be reliably pro duced. Everyone, it seems, is a reliabilist about knowledge in that sense. I present and defend two arguments that unreliable knowledge is possible. My first argument proceeds from an observation about the nature of achievements, namely, that achievements can proceed from unreliable abilities. My seco...
متن کاملReliabilism and Deflationism
In this article I examine several issues concerning reliabilism and deflationism. I critique Alvin Goldman’s account of the key differences between correspondence and deflationary theories and his claim that reliabilism can be combined only with those truth theories that maintain a commitment to truthmakers. I then consider how reliability could be analysed from a deflationary perspective and s...
متن کاملA Counterexample to the Robust and Anti-luck Virtue Epistemologies
This paper begins with an introduction to four different prominent versions of process reliabilism about knowledge, namely, the simple K-reliabilism, John Greco’s robust virtue epistemology, Duncan Pritchard’s anti-luck virtue epistemology, and the Goldmanian Kreliabilism. Its main objective is to offer a counterexample, namely, the fewer barn façades case, to the anti-luck virtue epistemology,...

Pretheoretically we hold that we cannot gain justification or knowledge through an epistemically circular reasoning process. Epistemically circular reasoning occurs when a subject forms the belief that p on the basis of an argument A, where at least one of the premises of A already presupposes the truth of p. It has often been argued that process reliabilism does not rule out that this kind of ...
متن کاملMedium-Term Stability of the Photon Beam Energy of An Elekta CompactTM Linear Accelerator Based on Daily Measurements of Beam Quality Factor
Introduction In this study, we aimed to assess the medium-term energy stability of a 6MV Elekta CompactTM linear accelerator. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first published article to evaluate this linear accelerator in terms of energy stability. As well as investigating the stability of the linear accelerator energy over a period of several weeks, the results will be useful for esti...
