Mathematical Explanation in Science

چکیده

Does mathematics ever play an explanatory role in science? If so then this opens the way for scientific realists to argue for the existence of mathematical entities using inference to the best explanation. Elsewhere I have argued, using a case study involving the primenumbered life cycles of periodical cicadas, that there are examples of indispensable mathematical explanations of purely physical phenomena. In this paper I respond to objections to this claim that have been made by various philosophers, and I discuss potential future directions of research for each side in the debate over the existence of abstract mathematical objects.

Are there Genuine Mathematical Explana - tions of Physical Phenomena ?

Many explanations in science make use of mathematics. But are there cases where the mathematical component of a scientific explanation is explanatory in its own right? This issue of mathematical explanations in science has been for the most part neglected. I argue that there are genuine mathematical explanations in science, and present in some detail an example of such an explanation, taken fro...

Mathematical Accidents and the End of Explanation

A conspicuous difference between ‘traditional’ philosophy of science and ‘traditional’ philosophy of mathematics concerns the relative importance of the notion of explanation. Explanation has long featured centrally in debates in the philosophy of science, for at least two reasons. Firstly, explanation has been viewed as playing an important role in the methodology of science, due principally t...

Pre-referee eprint Forthcoming in Philosophy of Science Dynamical Models and Explanation in Neuroscience

Kaplan and Craver claim that all explanations in neuroscience appeal to mechanisms. They extend this view to the use of mathematical models in neuroscience and propose a constraint such models must meet in order to be explanatory. I analyze a mathematical model used to provide explanations in dynamical systems neuroscience and indicate how this explanation cannot be accommodated by the mechanis...

Indispensability Arguments and Mathematical Explanation in Science

The aim of this thesis is to find a way to undermine the indispensability argument for mathematical platonism. In chapter 1 I provide a brief survey of the indispensability argument, arguing that the explanatory indispensability argument is stronger than earlier forms of the argument. This is because it has less controversial premises, appealing neither to confirmational holism nor to a strong ...

Application of Zadeh's Impossibility Principle to Approximate Explanation

We consider application of Zadeh’s impossibility principle and extended logic FLe to approximate scientific explanation from the standpoint of the philosophy of science. First, traditional explanation models are sketched. Second, Zadeh’s principle is considered in the broader context which includes reasoning and theory formation. Third, application ideas for using the impossibility principle to...
