Event-centric management of personal photos

چکیده
Since the last decade we have been observing a tremendous growth in the size of personal photo collections. For this reason, and due to the lack of proper automatic classification and annotation in standard album-centric photo software, users find it increasingly difficult to organise and make use of their photos. Although automatic annotation of media content can work to achieve more sophisticated multimedia classification and retrieval if its used in combination with rich knowledge representations, it still requires the availability of wellannotated training sets to produce the type of higher-level descriptions that would be of interest to casual users. Thus, the applicability of this approach is highly unlikely in the broad domain of personal photography. Recent developments in the media industry show an interest towards the organisation and structuring of media collections using an event-centric metaphor. This event-centric approach is inspired by strong research in psychology on how our autobiographical memory works to organise, recollect and share our life experiences. While this metaphor is backed by some early user studies, these were led before the large adoption of social media sharing services and there has been little recent research on how users actually use events digitally to organise and share their media. In this work we first present an updated study on what users are doing with their photos in current online platforms to support the suitability of an eventcentric approach. Next, we introduce a simple framework for event-centric personal photo management focused on temporal and spatial aspects and through it we describe our techniques for automatic photo organisation and sharing. Finally, we propose a platform for personal photo management that makes use of these automatic techniques and present an evaluation of a prototypical implementation.

Clues of Personal Events in Online Photo Sharing
There is currently a trend in media management and the semantic web to develop new media processing methods and knowledge representation techniques to organise and structure media around events. While this increased interest for events as the central aggregator when organising media is supported by strong research in the fields of knowledge representation and computer vision; it is not yet clea...

177 Abstract—Considerations for user-centric environments are regarded as essential for the successful deployment of convergence services in BcN. Event driven service (EDS) is regarded as a typical convergence service converging different functions of multiple service providers to support user-centric environments. This paper first describes the deployment model and service scenario of EDS, a c...
متن کاملUser-centric Metadata for Mobile Photos
Consumers are overwhelmed by the amount of personal media they create themselves and the media others share with them. They are gradually facing the problem how to use, manage, and organize all this personal media. Public and commercial media archives have traditionally addressed this media management problem by having metadata describing the content of the media. This approach, however, has tw...
متن کاملTransforming Personal Artifacts into Probabilistic Narratives
An approach focused on inferring probabilistic narratives from personal artifacts (including photographs) is presented in this work using personal photos metadata (timestamp, location, and camera parameters), formal event models, mobile device connectivity, external data sources and web services. We introduce plausibility measure — the occurrence-likelihood of an event node in the output graph....
متن کاملAn Approach for a Personal Information Management System for Photos for a Lifetime by Exploiting Semantics
Photo collections are one of the promising sources to tell story of life in this digital era. In this paper we present our work on organizing photos of a lifetime by exploiting semantic annotations. The complexity in using semantic technology is managed by introducing an annotation template corresponding to who, when, where, and what. Semantics of each dimension are semiautomatically annotated ...
