چکیده

Abstract: In this paper we present analog very large-scale integrated (VLSI) circuits that perform the selection process for attentive visual processing. These circuits use excitatory feedback in a winner-take-all computation to produce a hysteresis in the selection from one location to the next. We present several alternative forms of excitation that can be used to enhance surrounding regions of the presently attended location. Each form of excitation is discussed and experimental results from a one-dimensional array are presented. We also demonstrate the performance of these circuits within a system that receives optical inputs and outputs a single voltage that encodes the position of attention. The system demonstrates the potential use of these excitatory feedback circuits for electronic tracking of a stimulus within a noisy environment.

Analog VLSI Circuits for Attention-Based, Visual Tracking

A one-dimensional, visual tracking chip has been implemented using neuromorphic, analog VLSI techniques to model selective visual attention in the control of saccadic and smooth pursuit eye movements. The chip incorporates focal-plane processing to compute image saliency and to select a target feature for tracking. The target position and direction of motion are reported as the target moves acr...

Analog VLSI Circuits for Sensory Attentive Processing

Analog very large-scale integrated (VLSI) circuits that perform the selection process for attentive sensory processing are presented. These circuits use excitatory feedback in a winner-take-all computation to produce a hysteresis in the selection from one location to the next. They also use an inhibitory mechanism to disengage attention so that more than one stimulus is attended, even when the ...

A Minimal-Cost Inherent-Feedback Approach for Low-Power MRF-Based Logic Gates

The Markov random field (MRF) theory has been accepted as a highly effective framework for designing noise-tolerant nanometer digital VLSI circuits. In MRF-based design, proper feedback lines are used to control noise and keep the circuits in their valid states. However, this methodology has encountered two major problems that have limited the application of highly noise immune MRF-based circui...

Neuromorphic Analog VLSI Sensor for Visual Tracking: Circuits and Application Examples

This paper presents a one-dimensional visual sensor, implemented on a single VLSI chip using analog neuromorphic circuits, for selectively detecting and tracking the position of the feature with the highest spatial contrast present in the visual scene. The chip’s photoreceptors adapt to stationary backgrounds and can be tuned to respond maximally to specific target velocities. The sensor drasti...

Conjunction Search Using a 1-D, Analog VLSI-based, Attentional Search/Tracking Chip

The ability of animals to select a limited region of sensory space for scrutiny is an important factor in dealing with cluttered or complex sensory environments. Such an \attentional" system in the visual domain is believed to be involved in both the perception of objects and the control of eye movements in primates. While we can intentionally guide our attention to perform a speci c task, it i...
