Genetic Evaluation of American Suffolks through Progeny Testing
نویسندگان
چکیده
A progeny test was conducted in Western Australia in conjunction with the national central progeny test (CPT) program to evaluate 14 American Suffolk and 2 Australian rams as prime lamb sires, 4 of these rams having been evaluated previously in the national CPT program. The American Suffolks produced lambs that were heavier and had leaner carcases than lambs from the Australian sires. However, the relative eye muscle area of lambs sired by the American Suffolks were smaller than those of lambs from Australian sires. This probably reflects the slower maturity of the American Suffolks. These attributes and the superiority of particular American Suffolk sires over a number of the Australian sires tested indicate that, the American Suffolks will be useful to help the Australian prime lamb industry produce larger and leaner lambs.

Using Genomics to Improve the Genetic Potential and Management of Your Herd
For more than half a century, progeny testing has been the foundation of genetic selection programs in dairy cattle (Robertson and Rendel, 1950). Several factors make progeny testing especially advantageous in dairy cattle, most notably widespread use of artificial insemination (AI) with frozen semen and the fact that nearly all traits of economic importance, including milk production, milk com...
متن کاملImplications of avoiding overlap between training and testing data sets when evaluating genomic predictions of genetic merit.
The aim of this study was to evaluate and quantify the importance of avoiding overlap between training and testing subsets of data when evaluating the effectiveness of predictions of genetic merit based on genetic markers. Genomic selection holds great potential for increasing the accuracy of selection in young bulls and is likely to lead quickly to more widespread use of these young bulls with...
متن کاملConnectedness in Targhee and Suffolk flocks participating in the United States National Sheep Improvement Program.
Connectedness among animals in separate flocks reduces the risk of biased comparisons when selecting across flocks on EBV. The objective in this study was to assess levels of connectedness in the genetic evaluation of weaning weight among Targhee and Suffolk flocks participating in the US National Sheep Improvement Program (NSIP). Among flocks currently participating in the NSIP, a total of 25,...
متن کاملProgeny testing sires selected by independent culling levels for below-average birth weight and high yearling weight or by mass selection for high yearling weight.
Breeding values of sires resulting from selection either for reduced birth weight and increased yearling weight (YB, n = 8) or for increased yearling weight alone (YW, n = 9) were compared with each other and with sires representative of the population before selection began (BS, n = 12) using progeny testing. Reference sires (n = 6) connected these Line 1 sires with the Hereford international ...
متن کاملGenetic Mapping of Blooming Time in ‘Marcona’ × ‘Fragness’ Population with Using Molecular Markers
Flowering time is an important horticultural trait in almond since it is essential to avoid the late frosts that affect production in early flowering cultivars. Evaluation of this complex trait is a long process because of the prolonged juvenile period of trees and the influence of environmental conditions affecting gene expression year by year. In this research flowering time was studied in an...
