چکیده

Female calves (n = 54) were assigned to 1 of 3 whole milk feeding treatments at an average age of 7 days and remained on treatment for 70 days. The treatments were twice-aday feeding with weaning at 56 days of age (TAD56); once-a-day feeding with weaning at 56 days of age (OAD56); and once-aday feeding with weaning at 42 days of age (OAD42). Calves were housed in groups of 9 and were fed 5 litres of cold whole milk daily using teat feeders and offered ad libitum calf starter concentrate. The calf performance, health, and feed intakes were recorded and labour input per treatment was measured. The overall weight gain was 48.3, 47.3, and 47.1 kg/calf with TAD56, OAD56, and OAD42, respectively, over 70 days. The total concentrate intake and the corresponding total milk dry matter intake for 70 days were 82.3, 80.4, and 91.0 kg/calf and 32.4, 32.4, and 24 kg/calf for TAD56, OAD56, and OAD42, respectively. The labour input per calf per day was higher for TAD56 (88 sec) compared to OAD56 (66 sec) or OAD42 (53 sec) feeding systems. More group outbreaks of diarrhea were observed with once-a-day feeding and these outbreaks coincided with periods of cold weather. This study demonstrated that calves fed on a group basis once daily and weaned at 42 days may be reared successfully in terms of performance health and labour input.

Effect of milk feed source, frequency of feeding and age at turnout on calf performance, live-weight at mating and 1st lactation milk production

Female calves (n = 108) were assigned to 6 cold milk feeding treatments in two experiments for a 70-day period. Live-weight (LW) was measured weekly, with an additional LW taken at day 410 and post-calving for animals in experiment 1. In Experiment 1, the effect of feeding frequency and age of turnout to pasture on calf performance and 1st lactation milk yields were evaluated. The whole milk (W...

Effects of Oregano (Origanum vulgare) and Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) Oils on Growth Performance and Blood Parameters in Holstein Suckling Calves

This experiment was conducted to compare the effect of supplementation of milk with thyme (THY) and oregano (ORE) essences separately or a mixture of THY and ORE essences on growth performance, haematological parameters and some blood metabolites of Holstein suckling calves. Forty-eight Holstein calves (48.31±5.82 kg) were randomly allocated to four treatments including (1) control without esse...

Effects of Starter Protein Levels and Amounts of Milk Fed on Animal Health and Rumen Microbiota Changes in Holstein Male Calves

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of two different levels of starter protein and amounts of milk fed on animal health, fecal score, immune responses and microbial population in the rumen of Holstein male calves. Two levels of starter crude protein (17 and 20% of starter dry matter (DM) and two levels of milk fed (7 and 10% of body weight) were combined in a 2 × 2 factorial exp...

Effects of Weaning Age on Growth and Blood Parameters of Replacing Holstein Calves Fed on a Restricted Step Up and Down Milk Feeding Program

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of different early weaning programs on growth performance and blood parameters of dairy calves. To meet this objective, thirty Holstein calves with initial body weight of 36 ± 5 kg were randomly assigned at birth to one of the three weaning programs. Experimental groups were: 1) starter diet and whole milk from birth to 6 weeks and wean...

The Effect of Weaning Age on Performance and Economics of Holstein Calves Reared under Organic Farming System

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of weaning age on dry matter intake (DMI), average daily gain (ADG), feed efficiency (FE), feed cost (FC) and benefit index (BI) of Holstein calves reared under organic farming system. Thirty two Holstein calves were divided into two treatments: early weaning (EW) vs. late weaning (LW). Calves in the both groups were provided with whole mi...
