Salt Institute Newsletter (STM) First Quarter 2014 TRACE MINERALS AND REPRODUCTION IN RUMINANTS

چکیده

INTRODUCTION Reproductive efficiency is a major factor that affects profitability in ruminants. The reproductive process consists of the male producing viable sperm, the female exhibiting estrus and conceiving, and proper embryonic and fetal development that results in the birth of a live offspring. A number of trace minerals are important in maximizing reproductive performance. Even marginal trace mineral deficiencies can impair reproduction in animals showing few, if any, clinical signs of deficiency. Pastures and other feedstuffs consumed by ruminants are often deficient in one or more trace minerals. In grazing animals it is important to provide a trace mineral salt or complete mineral supplement (phosphorus, calcium, and magnesium in addition to salt and trace minerals) to ensure that trace mineral requirements are met. This newsletter will discuss the role of trace minerals on reproduction in ruminants.

Practical applications of trace minerals for dairy cattle.

Trace minerals have critical roles in the key interrelated systems of immune function, oxidative metabolism, and energy metabolism in ruminants. To date, the primary trace elements of interest in diets for dairy cattle have included Zn, Cu, Mn, and Se although data also support potentially important roles of Cr, Co, and Fe in diets. Trace minerals such as Zn, Cu, Mn, and Se are essential with c...

Trace Mineral Requirements for Dairy Cattle

A host of nutrients are needed by cattle to support functions associated with life, and to grow, reproduce, and nourish their offspring (i.e., produce milk). A vast amount of resources have been expended to quantify the amounts of specific nutrients needed to perform these function so that economically efficient diets can be formulated. Feeding diets that provide adequate, but not excessive, am...

Trace Minerals Deficiency Diagnosis in Ruminants

Introduction Trace elements are essential in human and animal’s nutrition. They play a major role in health, immunity and reproduction. The production of milk or meat as well as the housing and management conditions of high-performing animals can generate oxidative stress and health troubles in cattle. Some trace elements and vitamins have an anti-oxidative action and increase immunity. The mos...

ROLE OF TRACE MINERALS IN ANIMAL PRODUCTION What Do I Need to Know About Trace Minerals for Beef and Dairy Cattle, Horses, Sheep and Goats?

The role of trace minerals in animal production is an area of strong interest for producers, feed manufactures, veterinarians and scientists. Adequate trace mineral intake and absorption is required for a variety of metabolic functions including immune response to pathogenic challenge, reproduction and growth. Mineral supplementation strategies quickly become complex because differences in trac...
