چکیده
All 2700 children (under age 19) who had reparative cardiac surgery for one of seven congenital cardiac defects or coarctation of the aorta in the state of Oregon from 1958 through 1989. The year 1958 was marked by the initiation of cardiopulmonary bypass for cardiac surger~ carried out during the entry period in five Oregon hospitals, with 76 percent of operations performed at the Oregon Health Sciences University Hospital, Portland. The registry was maintained at the latter hospital and included not only children resident in Oregon but also those in Vancouver, Washington, part of the Portland, Oregon metropolitan area. Only 0.5 percent of operations were performed in five hospitals outside Oregon, and these were included. The distribution of patients by congenital defect was as follows: 425 Tetralogy of Fallot (TF), with 42 percent female; 378 ventricular septal defect (VSD), with 50 percent female; 472 atrial septal defect (ASD), with 63 percent female; 447 coarctation of the aorta (COA), with 34 percent female; 133 aortic stenosis (AS), with 22 percent female; 192 pulmonic stenosis (PS), with 50 percent female; 152 transposition of the great arteries (TGA), with 23 percent female; and 501 patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), with 76 percent female. The overall racial distribution was 93.5 percent white, 2.3 percent Asian, 1.8 percent Hispanic, 1.6 percent black, and 0.8 percent Native American. The operative procedures were described in the article; patients who had only palliative procedures were excluded.
