چکیده

Class C physiologic incident reports during undergraduate pilot training (UPT) revealed that 1.7 episodes of G-induced loss of consciousness (LOC) occurred monthly in 1980-1984. The mean +Gz for the LOC episodes was +3.8 Gz; the minimum, +2.0 Gz. The mean time of total incapacitation was 12.0 s (maximum, 180.0 s) as subjectively estimated by the aircrew. Improper performance of the anti-G straining maneuver was the most common etiology of the LOC episodes. Symptoms associated with the LOC included complete unawareness of the episode, disorientation, confusion, tingling in the extremities, and flail-type movements of the extremities. The most common aerobatic maneuver causing LOC (30% of the episodes) was the split-S. Safety within the UPT program could potentially be enhanced by ensuring that instructor pilots know how to most efficiently perform the protective anti-G straining maneuvers and recognize the symptoms associated with G-induced LOC.

Characterization of the resulting incapacitation following unexpected +Gz-induced loss of consciousness.

+Gz-induced loss of consciousness (G-LOC) results in incapacitation which can be characterized by the unconscious period (absolute incapacitation) and a subsequent period of confusion/disorientation (relative incapacitation). The sum of the absolute and relative incapacitation periods represents the total incapacitation period and may be equated to the overall length of time a pilot would be in...

Cardiovascular adaptation to repetitive +Gz in fighter pilots: a role for the vestibulosympathetic reflex

repetitive +Gz acceleration (ie, acceleration equivalent to more than the force of gravity).1 The adverse cardiovascular and neural consequences of exposure to the high +Gz environment are well known, with G-induced loss of consciousness (G-LOC) the most significant of these.2-9 High levels of applied +Gz challenge the body’s ability to maintain the appropriate arterial blood pressure. The phys...

Tilt-table testing as a predictor of + GZ tolerance.

BACKGROUND G-tolerance assessment is an essential element of both military pilot and pilot candidate evaluation. AIMS Attempt at prediction of individual relaxed + Gz tolerance on the basis of head-up tilt (HUT) testing. SETTINGS AND DESIGN In two stages, 20 healthy men at the mean age 21.5 years took part in this study. The first stage, a 45 min, HUT test was performed using the Westminste...

Human tolerance to Gz acceleration loads generated in high-performance helicopters.

BACKGROUND As the Gz capabilities of tactical helicopters increase, the risk to unprotected helicopter aircrew resulting from the physiologic response to transitions from -1 Gz (push) to +4.5 Gz (pull) loads needs to be addressed. METHODS There were 9 volunteers who participated in a study conducted at the Veridian Operations Centrifuge Facility in Warminster, PA. A 1-h mission scenario consi...

Acceleration-induced loss of consciousness. A review of 500 episodes.

Unconsciousness resulting from exposure to increased levels of head-to-foot (+Gz) acceleration stress (501 unconsciousness episodes) on a centrifuge in asymptomatic, healthy human subjects was investigated. A method for quantitatively measuring the kinetics of the unconsciousness and associated phenomenon was developed. In addition, a theoretical framework for describing the central nervous sys...
